Hip Bone LL Bone Part-1 BY PURVI SHAH B.P.T
Hip Bone
Hip Bone Irregular Bone It is made of three parts 1.Ilium 2.Pubis 3.Ischium Three parts joined to each other at a cup shaped hollow, called acetabulum .
Hip Bone The pubis and ischium separated by a large oval opening called the obturator foramen. The acetabulum articulates with head of femur to form the hip joint. The two hip bones form the pelvic or hip girdle
Anatomical Position The pubic symphysis and ASIS lies in the same coronal plane. The Plevic surface of the body of the pubis is directed backwards. The symphyseal surface of the body pubis lies in the median plane.
Ilium The ilium forms the upper expanded plate like part of the hip bone. An upper end which is called iliac crest. A lower end is which is smaller and is fused with pubis and ischium at the acetabulum. Three Borders: Anterior, posterior, medial. Three Surfaces: Gluteal, iliac, sacropelvic .
Iliac Crest The iliac crest is a broad convex ridge forming the upper end of the ilium. The anterior end of the iliac crest is called Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). The posterior end of the iliac crest is called posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS).
Pubis It forms the anteroinferior part of hip bone. It has a body, superior ramus, inferior ramus. 1.Body of pubis : This is flattened from before backwards, Superior border called Pubic Crest, Lateral end pubic crest called pubic tubercle, It has a anterior, posterior and medial surfaces.
Pubis 2.Superior Ramus: It extends from the body of the pubis to the acetabulum; above obturator foramen. It has superior border(pectineal line/pecten pubic); Anterior border(obturator crest); Inferior border. It has also pectineal surface, pelvic surface and obturator surface.
Pubis 3.Inferior Ramus: It extends from the body of the pubis to the ramus of the ischium, medial to the obturator foramen.
Ischium The Ischium forms the posteroinferior part of the hip bone. It has a body and ramus. 1.Body of ischium: This is thick and massive mass of the bone that lies below and behind acetabulum. It has two ends upper and lower; Three borders anterior, posterior and lateral Three surfaces femoral, dorsal and pelvic.
Acetabulum It is a deep cup shaped hemispherical cavity on the lateral aspect of the hip bone. It is directed laterally, downwards and forwards. The margin of the acetabulum is deficient inferiorly, this deficiency is called the acetabular notch. A horseshoe shaped articular surface or lunate surface.
Obturator Foramen This is a large gap in the hip bone, situated anteroinferior to acetabulum. It is large and oval in males, Small and triangular in females. It is closed by the obturator membrane.
Attachments on the HIP BONE
Ossification The hip bone ossifies in the cartilage from 3 primary centres and 5 secondary centres. Ischiopubic rami fuse with each other at 7 to 8 years of age.
Important Points The greater sciatic notch is wider in females than in males. The acetabulum is larger in males. Iliac fossa is deeper in males. The pubic crest is shorter in males. The subpubic angle is more in females. The pre auricular sulcus is more marked in females.
Articulations Hip Bone articulate with the head of femur forms hip joint(ball and socket joint).
