Quarter 1 – Module 5 Using Conditionals in Expressing Arguments
ZERO, FIRST, SECOND, & THIRD CONDITIONALS
ZERO CONDITIONALS -express permanent truths, such as scientific facts, and general habits
If you don’t brush your teeth, you get bad breath. If I’m tired, I go to bed early.
The structure is: if/when + present simple >> present simple
FIRST CONDITIONALS -talk about real & specific future events that are very possible to happen if the conditions are true
If the teacher approves, we will begin with the project.
FIRST CONDITIONALS - express predictions, superstitions, plans, warnings, and threats
If you study hard, you’ll do well in the test.
If you don’t stop smoking, you’ll get lung cancer.
The structure The if-clause uses the simple present tense while the result clause uses simple future tense (will + base form), going to form (is/are/am + going to + base form), and modals (may, might, can, and should).
Second conditionals -express improbable, impossible, imaginary, hypothetical, or unlikely situations in the present or future
EXAMPLE: If I were rich, I’d spend all my time travelling. (But I’m not rich so I can’t.)
EXAMPLE: If I had more time, I’d exercise more. (But I don’t have more time, so I don’t.)
The structure The if-clause uses the simple past tense to indicate the distance from reality, while the result clause uses would + base form.
Third conditionals -describe imaginary or hypothetical situations in the past.
Third conditionals - the only conditional structure that talks about the past rather than the present or future
Third conditionals - the impossible conditionals
The if-clause uses the past perfect tense (had + past participle), while would have or could have + past participle for the result-clause .
Example: I didn’t study. I didn’t pass the exam. ( reality ) If I had studied, I would have passed the exam. ( imagined past )
USES OF THIRD CONDITIONALS expressing regrets Example : If I had been smarter, I would have taken more time off!
USES OF THIRD CONDITIONALS giving criticism and feedback Example: Your party would have been better if you had invited more people.
USES OF THIRD CONDITIONALS reflecting on the past Example: If I hadn’t spent a year abroad, I wouldn’t have had so many awesome adventures.
