objectives define environmental science and appreciate its importance; identify the interdisciplinary components of environmental science; differentiate environment from environmental science; and create a poster that shows you care for your environment.

Nature and Scope of Environmental Science Start

Environmental Problems Renewable and Non Renewable Resources Environmental Science Environment Environmental Scientist VS Environmentalist Interdisciplinary What is Environmental Science?

Environmental Science

It is the study of the environment, the processes it undergoes, and the problems that arise generally from the interactions of humans with the environment.

Environmental Organizations/groups FRIENDS OF THE EARTH (FOE) A global network, representing 74 different countries, that defends the environment and champions a healthy and just world.

Environmental Organizations/groups SIERRA CLUB Works to inspire all Americans to explore, enjoy, and protect the Earth’s wild places, to practice and promote responsible use of the Earth’s ecosystems and resources, and to work to restore the quality of the natural environment that sustains us.

Environmental Organizations/groups NATURAL RESOURCES DEFENSE COUNCIL (NRDC) Uses law, science, and the support of its members to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places and ensure a safe and healthy environment for all people.

Environmental Organizations/groups Mother Earth Foundation Garbage is among the top enemies of nature. To address this alarming concern, Mother Earth Foundation campaigns zero-waste advocacy to local authorities. They hold programs in schools and barangays to promote environmental education and proper waste management.

Environmental Organizations/groups Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation works to restore natural habitats and aims to educate the public on how to protect wildlife from feasible harm. So far, they have completed programs to conserve rare species such as Philippine bats, Calamian deer, and cloud rats.

Environmental Organizations/groups World Wide Fund for Nature The name of the organization says it all. Their projects don't only focus on food, water, and climate, but on wildlife as well. In fact, they exert effort to ensure the survival of the rarest and most endangered species in the country. Also part of their aim is to transform lives by providing livelihood programs.

Environmental Organizations/groups Haribon Foundation Haribon Foundation uses their widely known platform to save different bird species and to conserve their habitats as they empower and educate people. They also partner with various groups and local government units to conserve biodiversity.

Environmental Organizations/groups Waves for Water Imagine the country running out of water - a drought would take over leading to a shrinking food supply, damaged habitat, crop damage, and more. If the thought of this makes you cringe, then you may want to work with Waves for Water. The organization works with leaders and partners to provide clean and potable water for communities here and abroad.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

What environmental problems happens in your community or locality?

RENEWABLE AND NON RENEWABLE RESOURCES

Renewable resources or those resources that can easily be replaced.

Non-renewable resources or those that cannot be easily renewed.

What are examples of renewable and non- renewable resources in your area?

Environmental Science three (3) main goals to understand how we as humans interact with the environment to learn how the natural world functions to determine how we affect the environment

ENVIRONMENT

the surrounding external conditions influencing development or growth of people or animal or plants, living or working conditions.

Four (4) major components Start

ATMOSPHERE implies the protective blanket of gases surrounding the earth

HYDROSPHERE compose of all types of water resources

LITHOSPHERE solid portion of the earth composed of rocks and soil

BIOSPHERE indicates the realm of living organisms and their interactions with the other organisms living in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere

Environment is constituted by the interacting systems of physical, biological and cultural elements Start

PHYSICAL ELEMENTS these are spaces, landforms, water beaches, climate, soils, rocks and minerals.

BIOLOGICAL ELEMENTS these are plants, animals, microorganisms and men constitute the biosphere.

CULTURAL ELEMENTS such as economic, social and political elements that are essentially man-made features.

What is your ideal environment?

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST VS ENVIRONMENTALIST

Environmental Scientist Environmentalist a specialist who studies, collects, and analyses data pertaining to environmental conditions or problems. an individual who promotes environmental awareness and advocates for the protection of the environment.

INTERDISCIPLINARY

Is environmental science important? Why?

Thanks Every small action counts. Let’s protect the environment together!

Assignment #2 1. What is an ecosystem? 2. What are the two types of ecosystem? Give its meaning and examples. 3. Give the level of hierarchy in an ecosystem? 4. Define Law of Tolerance.

Performance Task #1 In a short bond paper, create a poster that shows your ideal environment.

Directions: Modified True or False. Write True if the statement is correct, if the statement is False change the underline word (s) to make it true.

Environmental science is the study of patterns and processes in the natural world and their modification by human activity.

TRUE

Collects and analyses data pertaining to environmental conditions or problems is the work of an environmentalist .

Collects and analyses data pertaining to environmental conditions or problems is the work of an environmental scientist .

. Analogy: Zoology: animals , Botany: plants.

TRUE

Non-Renewable source can be replaced or replenished.

Renewable source can be replaced or replenished.

Geology studies the relationship between humans and other organisms, and their environment.

Ecology studies the relationship between humans and other organisms, and their environment.

It is constituted by the interacting systems of physical, biological, and cultural elements inter-related in various ways, individually as well as collectively is called an environment .

TRUE

Hydrosphere is composed of all types of water resources.

TRUE

Biosphere is the solid portion of the earth compose of rocks and soil.

Lithosphere is the solid portion of the earth compose of rocks and soil.

Is environmental science important? Why?

Well Done!

Thanks Every small action counts. Let’s protect the environment together!
