Poem 02

First, A Poem Must Be Magical First, a poem must be magical, Then musical as a sea-gull. It must be a brightness moving And hold secret a bird’s flowering. It must be slender as a bell, And it must hold fire as well. It must have the wisdom of bows And it must kneel like a rose. It must be able to hear The luminance of dove and deer. It must be able to hide What it seeks, like a bride. And over all I would like to hover God, smiling from the poem’s cover.

Line by line analysis 03

First, a poem must be magical, Then musical as a sea-gull. The above lines mean exactly what they say a poem should contain magic and be musical.

It must be a brightness moving And hold secret a bird’s flowering. Some brightness's are permanent and fixed, but a poem, like just a bird, must take a flight. That is the distinction between prose and poetry. Poetry goes up and continues to fly like a bird, whereas prose is plain and static. When first seen, the stationary bird represents a rosebud. When it first starts flying, it opens, spreads its wings, and blooms like a flower.

It must be slender as a bell, And it must hold fire as well. Terribly written poems must eliminate excess wordage and adjectives. In the next line, it means that a poem has to have a soul.

It must have the wisdom of bows And it must kneel like a rose. A great bow recognizes when to shoot and how to direct the arrow to its target. It just never misses a beat, just like a good poem. The expression "kneel like a rose" suggests that a poem, no matter how beautiful it is, should be humble as well.

It must be able to hear The luminance of dove and deer. Every good poem has a good man behind it. A good poet is almost always a good person. The word 'luminance' means 'brightness.' When I see a good face, I recognize it and respond.

It must be able to hide What it seeks, like a bride. A poem's meaning must not be stated explicitly. The reader is supposed to pick up on it, to feel it. The language itself does not tell you, but the substructure behind the language is the true meaning. It is neither explicit nor declarative.

And over all I would like to hover God, smiling from the poem’s cover. God hovers over it, acknowledging the goodness emanating from the poem, which embodies the spirituality present in a poem while also radiating it to others.

how can poetry serve as a powerful medium for expressing values and beliefs?
