Media and Information Literacy Quarter 2 – Module 6: Audio Information and Media
Definition of Terms Audio media Audio Podcast - It is the recording, transmission, reception, and reproduction of sound used for communication, information dissemination, and entertainment. - A digital audio or video file or recording, usually part of a themed series, that can be downloaded from a website to a media player or computer
Definition of Terms Hearing Listening - Is simply the act of perceiving sound by the ear. - Is something you consciously choose to do.
Definition of Terms Principles of Sound Design - The techniques for combining the different elements or objects. Visual media and information is one of the effective means in disseminating important messages. With the right combination of design elements, instructional messages will effectively deliver. Combining text and visual is one of the best way to deliver information to wide variety of audience for it promotes critical and creative thinking. However, information can be also be sent and received through the use of one’s ears. To learn more of the lesson, let us take a look on the next activity.
Activity : Classify the following concepts as to its files, formats and manner of storing information. Use the matrix below. Music , podcast , MP3 , CD , Memory card , Audio podcast , MP4 , WMA (Windows Media Audio), I nternet/Cloud , USB drive Audio Files Audio formats Audio storage Music Podcast MP3 CD Memory Card Audio podcast MP4 WMA Internet/Cloud USB drive How will you define audio files, audio formats and audio storage?
AUDIO MEDIA Information dissemination is not only delivered through texts and visuals. It can also be heard. However, hearing alone is not enough to fully consume the information, these information from audio media require listening. Listening refers to something that is consciously chosen to do and requires concentration. On the other hand, hearing is an act or perceiving sound by the ear.
With the never-ending innovation of media, information may come into different audio file type such as: Radio Broadcast live or recorded audio sent through radio waves to reach a wide audience.

Music vocal and/or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

Ways of storing audio media may be done through the use of tape, CD, USB drive, memory card, and computer hard drive Tape magnetic tape on which sound can be recorded.

In addition, audio media are classified into different file formats such as MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer 3) a common format for consumer audio, as well as a standard of digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on most digital audio players.

M4A/AAC (MPEG-4 Audio/Advanced Audio Coding) an audio coding standard for lossy digital audio compression. Designed to be the successor of the MP3 format, AAC generally achieves better sound quality than MP3 at similar bit rates.

Activity: Sing me softly! Instruction. Name your favorite song. Analyze its message through completing the table below. Song Title: Components Guide Questions Answers Purpose Form/Style Target Audience Who are the possible recipient of the song’s message? What is the intention of the song? Is there harmony of notes in the song? Are the melody properly arranged? How do they develop the message of the song?
