NATURE OF THE DIFFERENT DANCES

What is Dance?

What is Dance? A series of movements that follow the speed and rhythm of a piece of music.

FEATURE: Movement of body which includes hand, arm and head. Movement from one space to another.

Why do people dance? It has been used in worship. It plays a role in courtship. It serves as a form of acquiantance for man and woman. It is an expression of one’s feelings.

It brings victory or somehow restores health to life. It serves to entertain others. It gives beauty and inspiration to others. It is use as whole-body workout.

Traditional (Folk and Ethnic)

Traditional Dances Traditional dances are dances of indigenous communities that show cultural traits of people in specific time and place. Customs and traditions through dance steps and costumes are preserved in traditional dance.

Folk Dances A folk dance is a dance that reflects the life of the people of a certain country or region. Folk dances area classified according to geographical locations and the nature of the dances.

Ethnic Dances Ethnic dance is any dance form which can be identified as originating with an ethnic culture and expressing the movement aesthetics of that culture.

M odern and Contemporary

Modern Dance Modern dance is  a creative type of dance that is contemporary in form and uses abstract movements to portray ideas, feelings, and emotions .

Contemporary Dance It is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.

Ballroom Dance

Ballroom Dancing It is a partnership dance where couples, using step patterns, move rhythmically, expressing the characteristics of music.

Two styles of Ballroom

Smooth or Standard Ballroom Dances The Smooth, Standard style  focuses on the elegance, grace and fluidity of movement . Dancers rotate in a counter-clockwise direction, moving around the entire floor.

Latin Ballroom Dances Latin Ballroom dancing is characterized by an upright posture and sharp movements Latin dances are generally faster-paced, more sensual and have more rhythmic expression.

Cheerdance

It is the dance portion of cheerleading, where tumbling and stunts are not included. It is made of 4 parts, namely pom dance, jazz, hip-hop and line dance. Each performance is about 2-5 minutes, and is judged by the dance skills and choreography, as well as team coordination. CHEERDANCE

HIP-HOP/ STREET DANCE

Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking which was created in the 1970’s and made popular by dance crews in the US. HIP-HOP/STREETDANCE

FESTIVAL DANCE

Festival dances are cultural dances performed to the strong beats of percussion instruments by a community of people sharing the same culture usually done in honor of a Patron Saint or in thanksgiving of a bountiful harvest. Festival Dance
