Research terminologies English 10 quarter 4
ACCURACY -refers to the match between target population and sample ANONYMITY - no one, including the researcher, knows the identities of the participants DELIMITATION - Boundaries of the research, researchers decide what to include and exclude CONFIDENTIALITY - no one, except the researcher, knows the participants of the study
MEAN - Implies the average; the sum of a set of data divided by the number of data MARGIN ERROR - The allowance for slight error or miscalculation or changing circumstances in a study You can think of margin of error as a way of measuring how effective your survey is. The smaller the margin of error, the more confidence you may have in your results. The bigger the margin of error, the farther they can stray from the views of the total population. TRIANGULATION - multi-method to focus the research on different viewpoints and to produce a multi-faceted set of data QUESTIONNAIRES - Structured sets of questions on specified subjects that are used to gather information, attitudes, or opinions
FRAMEWORK - the structure and support that may be used as both the launching point and the on- going guidelines for investigating a research problem HYPOTHESIS - a tentative explanation based on theory to predict a causal relationship between variables. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS - application of statistical processes and theory to the compilation, presentation, discussion, and interpretation of numerical data. NULL HYPOTHESIS - the experimental intervention has "no effect," meaning that the treatment and control groups will not differ as a result of the intervention.
VARIABLE - any characteristic or trait that can vary from one person to another [race, gender, academic major] or for one person over time [age, political beliefs] DEPENDENT VARIABLE - a variable that varies due, at least in part, to the impact of the independent variable. It“depends ” on the value of the independent variable. variable that changes in response to the independent variable. INDEPENDENT VARIABLE - the conditions of an experiment that are systematically manipulated by the researcher . The independent variable is the one the experimenter controls CONTROL GROUP - the group in an experimental design that receives either no treatment or a different treatment from the experimental group.
APPLIED RESEARCH Conducted to generate knowledge that influences or improves practice APPLIED RESEARCH Conducted to generate knowledge that influences or improves practice CORRELATION RESEARCH - the conditions of an experiment that are systematically manipulated by the researcher. CORRELATIONAL STUDY A type of research design that depicts a relationship between variables, but not necessarily one of cause -effect
