6 QSEN Competencies
in Nursing

Nurses need to acknowledge patients or
designees as partners in providing
compassionate care based on respect for
patient preferences, values, and needs.
Patient-Centered Care

This ensures nurses function effectively
within nursing and interprofessional teams
with open communication and respect to
ensure optimal patient care.
Teamwork & Collaboration

This enables nurses to employ the best
current evidence, coupled with their clinical
expertise and patient/family preferences and
values for quality healthcare.
Evidence-Based Practice

Healthcare is always evolving. Nurses need
to use data to monitor patients’ outcomes
and to implement processes to design and
test changes to continuously improve health
care systems’ quality and safety.
Quality Improvement

This competency aims to minimize the risk of
harm to both patients and providers through
an effective system and individual nurse
care.
Safety

Nurses need to use information and
technology to communicate effectively,
mitigate errors, and enable good decision-
making.
