Quantitative Research Design
How do you want your data to be measured and collected? 3 How does the researcher answer the questions stated in Chapter 1?
Research Design It is defined as the rational and coherent overall strategy that the researcher uses to incorporate all the vital components of the research study. The research design of a study can easily be identified based on the abstract of a journal article. 4
Quantitative Research Design Quantitative research designs vary in terms of the following: the intent use of manipulation procedures used 5 5
Quantitative Research Designs 6
Variables Independent variable = cause. Its value is independent of other variables in your study. Dependent variable = effect. Its value depends on changes in the independent variable. Intervening/extraneous variable – a variable that is not a part of the study but could affect the outcome 7
Validity Internal Validity The degree to which changes in the dependent variable can be attributed to the independent variable External Validity The degree to which changes in the dependent variable can be attributed to extraneous variables 8
Experimental Research Design The main purpose of experimental research design is to find out whether an intervention considered as the independent variable (cause) has an effect on a dependent variable (effect) . 9
True Experimental Design A true experimental design must contain the following elements: treatment or intervention controlling extraneous variables randomization of participants 10 10
Experimental Research Design 11 11
Quasi-Experimental Design A quasi-experimental design requires the independent variable to be manipulated but it lacks a key element of an experimental design, which is randomization . 12 12
Quasi-Experimental Design 13 13 13
What other situations can quasi-experimental research design be used? 14
Correlational Design Correlational research studies the association between two variables but does not tell about its causality. 15 15
Example of a relationship between two variables 16 16
Correlation 17 17 Type Definition Example Positive correlation As one variable increases, so is the other variable. This is also known as direct relationship. Higher motivation level of students is related to higher academic performance. Negative correlation As one variable increases, the other variable decreases. This is also known as inverse relationship. Higher stress level of students is related to lower academic performance.
When is it appropriate to use a correlational research design? 18
Descriptive Research Design The purpose of descriptive research design is to study a naturally occurring phenomenon or subject of interest. It simply describes a specific characteristic or behavior of a target population. It explains different patterns of information about a target population 19 19
Types of Descriptive Research 20 20
What are some limitations of a descriptive research design? 21
Ex Post Facto Ex post facto research design is a method of scientific study in which researchers look at existing conditions and work backwards to identify relationships or causal factors. The variables of interest have already occurred, and their effects or results are being studied after the fact. 22
Example of Ex Post Facto Studies The Impact of Social Media Use on Adolescent Self-Esteem: An Ex Post Facto Study Urbanization and Its Relation to the Increase in Asthma Cases: Retrospective Analysis Analyzing the Effects of Previous Economic Downturns on Small Business Closures Nutritional Deficiencies and Academic Performance: A Correlative Ex Post Facto Investigation The Influence of Past Particulate Air Pollution on Current Rates of Respiratory Diseases 23
APPLICATION 24
Analyze the Situation Jamie and her groupmates conducted a study exploring the extent to which parenting styles are related to the self-esteem of Filipino adolescents. The participants answered two questionnaires. The study revealed that parenting styles were positively related to the self-esteem of Filipino adolescents. 25
Quick Check Mr. Araullo is a faculty member at Acacia High School, who wants to know the career preferences of their senior high school students. He asked all the students and found out that there are varying preferences of the students according to their academic track. 26
Quick Check Maria wants to know whether caffeine has an effect on the concentration level of college students. She randomly assigned her participants to two treatment conditions. One group was given regular coffee, while the other group was given a decaffeinated coffee. She then administered a concentration task. 27 27 27 27 27
Quick Check Why is a quasi-experimental design notconsidered a true experiment? 28 28 28 28 28
