ASTEROIDS Small rocky or metallic body that orbits the Sun. They are generally irregular in shape and often have surfaces covered with craters. Asteroids range in size from a few meters to over 500 km.
Iron and Nickel are the asteroid’s components, the same metal that make up the Earth’s core. Alvarez Hypothesis An element called Iridium was discovered on oceanic sedimentary layers of Denmark, Italy, and New Zealand, by Alvarez Brothers namely Luis and Walter Alvarez. An asteroid with about ten kilometers in diameter made an impact on Earth. This phenomenon caused the blocking of sunlight in the air, bringing a period of long winter that caused the mass extinction of plants and animals including dinosaurs. ASTEROIDS
Where are they found? Asteroids are found in the MAIN ASTEROID BELT between Mars and Jupiter. Astronomer Johan Bode discovered the existence of asteroid in the year 1800. Their number is estimated to be about 30,000 but only 7,000 have been identified. A relatively higher silicate content caused these celestial body to reflect light.
FAMOUS ASTEROIDS Ceres is the largest asteroid. (940 km in diameter) It was discovered by Guiseppe Piazzi on January 1, 1801.
FAMOUS ASTEROIDS Pallas is the Second Largest Asteroid (540 km in diameter) Vesta is the Third Largest Asteroid (510 km in diameter)
Types of Asteroids (according to color and composition) C-Type Asteroids – very dark and carbonaceous. There are 75 percent of known asteroids that are the C-Type. Ceres is the most famous C-type asteroid. Explored by the Dawn spacecraft from 2014 to 2018.
S-type Asteroids – rusty red in color and are composed of iron and magnesium silicate. 3 Juno is one of the S-Type asteroid. Types of Asteroids (according to color and composition)
M-type Asteroid rich with metallic substances. 216 Kleopatra , a dog-bone-shaped asteroid is classified as M-type asteroid . Types of Asteroids (according to color and composition) Types of Asteroids (according to color and composition)
1. Athens – lie near the orbit of Mars (ex: Ceres, Pallas, Juno, and Vesta ) 2. Apollos – lie near Jupiter. (ex: Eros, Geographos , Icarus) 3. Trojans – lie within the main asteroid belt. (ex: Hector, Diomedes , Agamemmon , and Petrocious ) Types of Asteroids (according to position)
