Looking Back to Your Lesson
The author states, Question: What is the message of the poem? Evidence: 4. 5. 3.
You always encounter different authors who use set of evidences from multiple sources to support their text and come up with reliable information as well as to persuade readers. But how can you determine if the source in a text you are reading at has good or valid evidence? In validating evidence, is there a need to check the credibility and reliability? Brief Introduction This lesson will help you judge the validity of the evidence of a text. After finding the evidence in the text, next is to identify whether these facts or data support the point and came from reliable and credible source. If they do, then these evidence become valid. How do you evaluate or judge the validity of the evidence? Davis Oldham in his article, enumerated different ways how to evaluate them and these are the following.
Is the evidence relevant ? Is it really about the point the author wants to prove, or did it go off on a tangent, providing facts that do not have anything to do with the point? Is the evidence sufficient ? Is there enough of it, or do you need more to feel convinced? Brief Introduction Is the evidence representative ? This is the hardest one to understand, but also the most important. Representative evidence is evidence that accurately represents the whole topic, not just a selected piece.
What Makes Evidence Valid?
Evidence is said to be valid if it is strong and connects to the question and answer. Evidence found in primary source such as literary works, historical documents, photos, biographies and quotations is an example of strong and valid evidence. When reading a passage and selecting specific evidence, ask yourself, ''How does this quotation, article, photo, or data support the question and answer or the text itself.
Example: Weak Use of Evidence I believe that online learning is a practical method of acquiring knowledge this time of pandemic. It is a platform where students can access learning at any place and time. According to the WHO, one in four persons in the world will be affected by mental and neurological disorders at some point in their lives. Through online learning, education continues twenty- four hours a day and seven days a week which is very helpful in new normal education.
This is a weak example of evidence because the evidence is not related to the claim. What does the claim about online learning have to do with mental disorder? It may have a connection but in this paragraph, definition of online learning must be the focus.
Example: Stronger Use of Evidence I believe that online learning is a practical method of acquiring knowledge this time of pandemic. It is a platform where students can access learning at any place and time. Ruiz (2006) defined online learning as using internet technology for enhancing performance and knowledge on their convenient time. Through online learning, education continues twenty- four hours a day and seven days a week which is very helpful in new normal education.
This is a better example, as the evidence is more smoothly integrated into the text, the definition of online technology from Ruiz is an evidence that supported and strengthened the claim or the topic which makes it valid.

In 1945, the Charter of the United Nations became the first international agreement to affirm the principle of equality between women and men. The UN celebrated its first official International Women's Day on 8 March during International Women’s Year in 1975. Two years later, in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions.
International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labor movements at the turn of the twentieth century across North America and Europe. The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on February 28 1909, which the Socialist Party of America dedicated in honor of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York where women protested against harsh working conditions. In 1917, women in Russia chose to protest and strike under the slogan "Bread and Peace" on the last Sunday in February (which fell on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar). Their movement ultimately led to the enactment of women’s suffrage in Russia.
International Women's Day is an occasion to celebrate the progress made towards achieving gender equality and women's empowerment but also to critically reflect on those accomplishments and strive for a greater momentum towards gender equality worldwide. It is a day to recognize the extraordinary acts of women and to stand together, as a united force, to advance gender equality around the world. In 2021, UNESCO joins its voice to that of the entire UN family by celebrating this International Women’s Day under the theme of “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”. -https://en.unesco.org/commemorations/womenday
