WH-questions begin with who, what, when where, why and how . We use them to ask for information.
We can use wh - questions to ask for information about specific qualities, time, places, people, etc. by using different question words.
WHAT Use “what” to ask for information about things and actions.
WH O Use “who” as an interrogative pronoun to begin questions about people.
WH EN Use “when” to ask for information about what time something happens.
WH ERE Use “where” to ask for information about place.
WH Y Use “why” to ask about reasons and explanations
HOW Use “how” to describe the manner that something is done
RULES In Formulating WH-questions
Rule 1: With an Auxiliary verb Structure: Wh - + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb
Rule 1: With an Auxiliary verb Example: Where did the story take place? Where – Wh -question did- Auxiliary verb story – Subject take – main verb
Rule 2: Without an Auxiliary verb Don’t use auxiliary verbs when question words is the subject or part of the subject. Structure: wh - (subject) + verb.
