RAJA RAM MOHAN ROY

Raja Ram Mohan Roy was an Indian reformer who was also the founder Brahmo Sabha. He was given the title of ‘Raja’ by Mughal Emperor Akbar II . By many historians , he was given the title of ‘Father of Indian Renaissance’.

Early Life and Education Career Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born on 22 May , 1772 in Hoogly . Father – Ramakanta Roy Mother- Tarini Devi A great scholar in English , Latin, Greek , French and Tibetan. He started his career at British East India Company . Raja Ram Mohan Roy is regarded as one of the first modern Indians .*

Religious Reformation and Brahmo Samaj Maha Nirvana Tantra (Book of the Great Liberation)- Created by Roy, Vidyavagish and Carey between 1706 and 1797. The Tuhfat-Ul-Muwahiddin (A gift to Monotheists) -First work of Ram Mohan Roy - first published in 1803 . The Atmiya Sabha (Society of Friends) - Founded by Raja Ram Mohan Roy in 1814. Raja Ram Mohan Roy was against polytheism of Hinduism . Bramho Samaj Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a founder of the Bramho Sabha in 1828, which was engendered the Bramho Samaj . Bramho Samaj was an influential social religious reform movement of India .

Social reformation and Economic Contribution Raja Ram Mohan Attacked – Child marriage Illiteracy of women and the degraded state of widows . He was against the perceived of Hindu society at that time . He was against Sati Dah . He was motivated by the experience of seeing his one sister-in-law being forced to die by Sati . Raja Ram Mohan Roy raised his voice for the obligation of the East India Company’s trading rights.

Educational Reformation and Literary Works He founded the Anglo-Hindu College in 1822 ,which combined Indian and Western education and the Vedanta College in 1826 which offered instruction in both Indian and European philosophy . He also helped to set up the Hindu College in 1817 , which was later become the Presidency College , one of the best Educational Institution of the country .

He published his revolutionary ideas in the form of literary work such as : * Tuhfat-ul-Muwahiddin * Mudaka Upanishad * Vendata Grantha * Gaudiya Vyakaran * Kathopanishad Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded three journals . The Brahmanical magazine. The Bengali Weekly. Samvad Kaumudi. * Persian Weekly – Murat- ul -Akbar .

He died in 1883 in Bristol ,England at age of 61 . He was buried in Arnos vale cemetery . His legacy lives in the hearts and minds of Millions of Indians and Bengalis who regard him as the Father of Indian Renaissance.
