OUTLINE Raman Effect Raman lines Experimental study of Raman Effect

RAMAN EFFECT When a beam of monochromatic light was passed through organic liquids such as benzene, toluene, etc., the scattered light contained other frequencies in addition to that of the incident light.

RAMAN LINES He took a round – bottom glass flask was filled with pure dust free benzene. The liquid was strongly illuminated by the mercury blue line of wavelength 435.nm. He found that in the spectrum obtained there were lines with original wavelength and also with longer and shorter wavelength.

LINES OBTAINED STOKES LINES: Lines having wavelength greater than that of the incident wavelength. ANTI STOKES : Lines having wavelength LINES shorter than that of the incident wavelength. UNMODIFIED: Line having the wavelength of the LINE incident wavelength.
