INTRODUCTION DEFINITION: THE MOVEMENT OF A JOINT TO THE EXTENT POSSIBLE WITHOUT CAUSING PAIN. ENGAGING IN ROUTINE TASKS- SUCH AS BATHING , DRESSING, WRITING - HELPS US TO USE MUSCLE GROUPS THAT KEEP MANY JOINTS IN EFFECTIVE RANGE OF MOTION.
PURPOSE TO STIMULATE NORMAL MOTION OF JOINTS TO PROMOTE AND MAINTAIN JOINT MOBILITY TO FACILITATE COMFORT FOR THE PATIENT TO MAINTAIN MUSCLE STRENGTH TO RESTORE COORDINATION TO INCREASE THE CIRCULATION TO EXTREMITIES.
TYPES OF RANGE OF MOTION TYPES DESCRIPTION ACTIVE ROM EXERCISE PATIENT DOES WITHOUT ANY ASSISTANCE . PASSIVE ROM EXERCISE PATIENT DOES WITH ASSISTANCE OF NURSE. ACTIVE – ASSISTIVE ROM EXERCISE PATIENT NEEDS SOME ASSISTANCE TO PERFORM MOTION.

ABDUCTION :- MOVEMENT OF A LIMB AWAY FROM THE MIDLINE OF THE BODY. ADDUCTION :- MOVEMENT OF THE LIMB TOWARDS THE MIDLINE OF THE BODY. CIRCUMDUCTION :- CIRCULAR MOTION OF A BODY PART.
DORSIFLEXION :- THE BACKWARD BENDING AND CONTRACTING MOVEMENT OF THE FOOT. PLANTAR FLEXION :- THE MOVEMENT OF THE FOOT IN A DOWNWARD MOTION AWAY FROM THE BODY. ELEVATION :- UPWARD (SUPERIOR)MOTION OF THE SCAPULA OR MANDIBLE. DEPRESSION :- DOWNWARD MOTION OF THE SCAPULA OR THE MANDIBLE. EVERSION :- THE ACT OF TURNING OUT.
INVERSION :- THE ACT OF TURNING INSIDE. FLEXION: - DECREASE IN THE ANGLE BETWEEN THE BONES.(BENDING OF THE JOINTS) EXTENSION :- INCREASE IN THE ANGLE BETWEEN THE JOINTS AND STRAIGHTENS THE JOINTS.
MEDIAL ROTATION :- MOVEMENT TOWARDS THE CENTRE OF THE BODY. LATERAL ROTATION :- MOVEMENT AWAY FROM THE CENTRE OF THE BODY. OPPOSITION :- THUMB MOVEMENT THAT BRINGS THE TIP OF THE THUMB IN CONTACT WITH THE TIP OF THE FINGER. PROTRACTION :- ANTERIOR MOTION OF THE SCAPULA OR MANDIBLE. RETRACTION :- POSTERIOR MOTION OF THE SCAPULA OR MANDIBLE.
PRONATION :- WHEN YOUR PALM OR FOREARM FACES DOWN IT IS KNOWN AS PRONATION . SUPINATION :- WHEN YOUR PALM OR FOREARM FACES UP IT IS KNOWN AS SUPINATION .
GUIDELINES FOR RANGE OF MOTION EXERCISE
1.TEACHING: TEACH THE PATIENT WHAT EXERCISE IS BEING UNDERTAKEN, WHY , AND HOW IT WILL BE DONE . 2. AVOID OVEREXERTION: AVOID CONTINUNING EXERCISES TO THE POINT THAT THE PATIENT DEVELOPS FATIGUE. 3.AGE CONSIDERATION : AVOID NECK HYPEREXTENSION AND ATTEMPTS TO ACHIEVE FULL RANGE OF MOTION IN ALL JOINTS WITH OLDER ADULTS
4. START GRADUALLY AND SLOWLY: ALL MOVEMENTS SHOULD BE SMOOTH AND RHYTHMIC , IRREGULAR AND JERKY MOVEMENTS ARE OFTEN UNCOMFORTABLE FOR PATIENTS. 5. MINIMUM FRICTION : KEEP FRICTION AT A MINIMUM WHEN PASSIVELY MOVING EXTREMITIES TO AVOID INJURING THE SKIN .
6. INTERVAL: USE ROM EXERCISE TWICE A DAY , AND DO THE EXERCISE REGULARLY TO BUILD UP MUSCLE AND JOINT CAPABILITIES. PERFORM EACH EXERCISE 2 TO 5 TIMES. 7. MONITOR VITALS : EXPECT THE PATIENTS RESPIRATORY AND HEART RATE TO INCREASE DURING EXERCISE. THESE RATES SHOULD RETURN TO USUAL RESTING LEVELS WITHIN 3 MINUTES.
