Nerve physiology Brief account of cells of the nervous system Ionic basis of resting membrane potential and action potential Generation and transmission of nerve impulse Synaptic transmission, types of synapses, EPSP, IPSP and neural integration, neurotransmitters Receptors and generator potentials Reflexes

Subject Matter Theory: Muscle physiology Histology and types of muscles Molecular organization and molecular mechanism of contraction Excitation and excitation-contraction coupling Nutrition and Physiology of Digestion Anatomy and histology of human digestive system, including oral cavity and tongue Histology of digestive glands: salivary gland, pancreas and liver Digestion and absorption of macronutrients

Subject Matter Theory: Nutrition and Physiology of Digestion Nutritional requirements (Balanced diet) Neural and hormonal regulation of digestion Heart and circulation (Cardiovascular System) Histology of circulatory system: heart, arteries, veins, capillaries and lymph vessel Properties of cardiac muscle Origin and conduction of cardiac impulse ECG, cardiac cycle and its regulation, Blood pressure Circulating fluids- blood and lymph- their composition and function, lymph nodes, immunity, disorders of blood

Subject Matter Theory: Respiration The respiratory apparatus and histological organization of respiratory system Respiratory cycle- Its initiation and regulation Hemoglobin and transport of gases Excretion Histology of kidney and urinary tract Kidney as an example of structure-function correlation Nephron and urine formation Regulation of ECF volume, tonicity and pH

Subject Matter Theory: Endocrine regulation Chemical nature of hormones and their mechanisms of action Role hypophysis , thyroid, parathyroids , adrenal, pancreas Hypothalamo-hypophysial control of endocrine function Histology of human male and female reproductive systems Thermoregulation Thermoregulatory mechanisms in homeotherms

Subject Matter Practical Preparation of haemin and hemochromogen crystals. Estimation of haemoglobin Differential and total WBC count. Erythrocyte count . Effects of hypotonic and hypertonic saline on RBCs Detection of abnormal contents of human urine Estimation of blood sugar Measurement of blood pressure – sphygmomanometer Study of permanent slides-stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, trachea, lung, kidney, ovary and testis. Preparation of temporary mount: nerve cells from spinal cord and squamous epithelium from inner lining of mouth.
