It is situated at Hijli , Kharagpur in Paschim Medinipur district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is an alternate railway station to Kharagpur railway station serving the city of Kharagpur.
CHALLENGES FACED BY PASSENGERS :- Hijli is one of the important but neglected stations of KGP Division. It is called the satellite station of KGP, but condition of the platforms are poorer than any C class station. Platforms have rough irregular surface, platform 2 lacks basic passenger amenities like toilets, sufficient water taps, etc. Also the platform surface is fully irregular which makes the passengers prone to fall. The toilets at platform 1 is also not in very good condition. Only 1 FOB is present at the station which is not wide enough to accommodate passengers comfortably. Communication to Hijli from other parts of kharagpur and even KGP station is poor, local cab mafias loot passenger and there is 0 public transport near station, only reserve cab to go to any destination and they charge high and passengers have no other option outside hijli station. SER have shifted many important trains to Hijli from KGP to reduce load in KGP, but facilities are not at all developed at Hijli and everyday passengers are suffering. It is very important to improve the connectivity of the station to other parts of the city. Also, amenities at the station needs to be improvised and upgraded to meet the standards. Drinking water, Toilets, Seating, Canteen, Signages etc should be made available at both the platforms to assist the passengers in smooth travel. Considering the above mentioned challenges, components of the station development has been formulated.

COMPONENTS PROPOSED:- The project envisages cost efficient improvement to facades, provision of wide, well lit aesthetically pleasing entrance porches. Existing building usage has been reviewed and space has been released in favour of passengers near the station entrances and the Railway offices should be suitably relocated. The project aims to relocate redundant/old buildings in a cost efficient manner so that space is released for higher priority passenger related activities and future development may be carried out smoothly. Elements of landscaping, green patches and local art and culture has been used to create a pleasant experience for the station users. Building has been replanned and separate entry-exit routes have been marked accordingly. The furniture available on Waiting halls, Platforms, Retiring Rooms, Offices has been reviewed and intervention planned for more comfortable and durable furniture suitable to the Railway Stations of that area. Signages have been well designed for intuitive way finding, should have good visibility and be aesthetically pleasing. Escalators have been provided and roof top concourse has been proposed with amenities like commercial area, food court, conference room etc.
