To read critically means to dig deeper into the text by using certain processes and asking various questions to reach an enhanced clarity and comprehension. It also involves presenting a logical argument that evaluates and analyzes what you have read. Critical Reading Main Menu A n  argument  that is both valid, and all of whose premises are true. “What is the author trying to say?” or “What is the main argument being presented?”

five (5) steps on how to become a critical reader Determine the central claims or purpose of the text (thesis statement). Step 1 T he author's main idea or main  argument . It is the concept or position they are '' claiming '' to be true. to narrate, describe, define, exemplify, compare, classify, persuade, argue, or give solutions to a problem

five (5) steps on how to become a critical reader Examine the evidence (the supporting facts/claims, examples, etc.) the text has. Step 4 What counts as evidence in this argument? Is the evidence statistical? literary? historical? From what sources is the evidence taken?

five (5) steps on how to become a critical reader Evaluate all the arguments and the pieces of evidence in the text. Step 5 Is the argument is strong, why? Could it be better or differently supported? Are there gaps or inconsistencies in the argument? Are the conclusions warranted by the evidence presented? What might an opposing argument be?
