GENDER EQUALITY
&BRAZILIAN LAWS
READING TEXT
Gender equality means that all people, regardless of gender, have the same rights, duties,
and opportunities. In Brazil, the law protects the rights of women, men, and people of all gender
identities. The Federal Constitution of 1988 says that men and women are equal under the law.
Brazil also has the Maria da Penha Law, which protects women against domestic
violence. Another important law is the Law of Gender Identity, which helps transgender people
change their name and gender in official documents.
SomeBrazilian cities have programs to promote respect and education about gender
equality. Brazil was one of the first countries in Latin America to allow name changes without
surgery. Many companies today are working to have equal pay for women and men.
