REAL LIFE APPLICATIONS OF FIBER OPTIC CABLES HASANUZZAMAN 2013-2-50-008 MD. NAZMUL ISLAM 2013-2-55-027

CONTENTS Introduction Applications of fiber optics Future trends of fiber optics Advantages & Disadvantages Conclusion

INTRODUCTION Fiber optic cable is a high-speed  data transmission medium. It contains tiny glass or plastic filaments that carry light beams.  Digital data is transmitted through the cable via rapid pulses of light. The receiving end of a fiber optic transmission translates the light pulses into binary values, which can be read by a computer . fiber optic cables transmit data via light waves, they can transfer information at the speed of light. Fiber optic cables provide the fastest data transfer rates of any data transmission medium. They are also less susceptible to noise and interference compared to copper wires or telephone lines. Since fiber optic cables provide fast transfer speeds and large bandwidth, they are used for a large part of the Internet backbone. Fiber connections can provide homes and businesses with data transfer speeds of 1  Gbps .

Telephone Real life Applications of Fiber optic Cables

Telecommunications Fiber is laid and used for transmitting and receiving purposes. Networking Used to connect users and servers in a variety of network settings and help increase the speed and accuracy of data transmission Broadcast/CATV Broadcast/cable companies are using fiber optic cables for wiring CATV, HDTV, internet, video on-demand and other applications Internet Fiber optic cables transmit large amounts of data at very high speeds. This technology is therefore widely used in internet cables. As compared to traditional copper wires fiber optics carry more data . Cable Television These cables are ideal for transmitting signals for high definition televisions, because they have greater bandwidth and speed.

Medical Used as imaging tools and also as lasers for surgeries Military and Space Applications With the high level of data security required in military and aerospace applications, fiber optic cables offer the ideal solution for data transmission in these areas . Telephone Calling telephones within or outside the country has never been so easy. With the use of fiber optic communications, we can connect faster and have clear conversations without any lag on either side . Computer Networking between computers in a single building or across nearby structures is made easier and faster with the use of fiber optic cables.

Fiber optics communication is definitely the future of data communication . some of the envisioned future trends in fiber optic communication are, All Optical Communication Networks : Fiber optic communication is envisioned to be completely in the optical domain where all signals will be processed in the optical domain, without any form of electrical manipulation . In such networks, all signals will be processed in the optical domain, without any form of electrical manipulation. Presently, processing and switching of signals take place in the electrical domain, optical signals must first be converted to electrical signal before they can be processed, and routed to their destination. After the processing and routing, the signals are then re-converted to optical signals, which are transmitted over long distances to their destination. The optical to electrical conversion, and vice versa adds a delay in the network and is a limitation to achieving very high data rates. FUTURE TRENDS

Multi – Terabit Optical Networks : Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) paves the way for multi-terabit transmission. The need for increased bandwidth availability has led to the interest in developing multi-terabit optical networks. Researchers are looking at achieving higher bandwidth with 100Gb/s. With the continuous reduction in the cost of fiber optic components, the availability of much greater bandwidth in the future is possible.

Polymer Optic Fibers : Polymer optical fibers offer many benefits when compared to other data communication solutions such as copper cables, wireless communication systems, and glass fiber. In comparison with glass optical fibers, polymer optical fibers provide easy and less expensive processing of optical signals, and are more flexible. Improvement in Optical Amplification Technology : Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) is one of the critical technologies used in optical fiber communication systems . To increase the gain bandwidth of EDFA, better gain equalization technology for high accuracy optical amplification will be developed.

Advantages Benefit of optical fiber in real life. Large bandwidth to utilize. Very low transmission loss. Small size and light weight. High signal security. Immunity to interference and crosstalk.

Disadvantages Only point to point working is possible. Highly skilled staff. Optical fiber require more protection around the cable. Cables are expensive to install but last longer than copper cables.  Transmission on optical fiber requires repeating at distance intervals.

This concludes our study of optical fiber communication of real life application. We have explain the optical fiber in different field in real life, although this presentation does not cover all the all the aspects of optical fiber. A huge amount of development can be made by making further research and work on fiber optics. The trend is expected to continue in the future leading to a new generation in fiber optics communications. Conclusion
