About This Presentation

reduce recycle reuse

Slide Content

1.Reduce
2. Recycle
3. Reuse

Meaning of reduce, recycle and
reuse

aim
•Three Rs aim to
generate minimum
amount of waste
and to extract
maximum benefit
from the waste
generated &
produced

Reduce the use of harmful products eg.. Polybags etc
Promoting awareness amongst the humans towards judicious use of the
products to reduce waste generation
Learning to use the products which are eco-friendly & biodegradable
Household waste (vegetable peels, garden waste) can be used reduced
to make compost
Using washable napkins instead of paper napkins
Disposables like plastics plates, plastic food storage bags must not be
thrown away as they last for a long time and can be put to many uses

•Promoting awareness amongst the humans towards
judicious use of the products to reduce waste
generation
•Learning to use the products which are eco-friendly &
biodegradable
•Household waste (vegetable peels, garden waste) can
be used reduced to make compost
•Minimize the effect of hazardous or nuisance wastes
on the community
•Reduces waste disposal

•Processing the waste into raw materials
usable in other useful products
•Recycling becomes possible if the waste is
segregated, cleaned & reprocessed into new
useful products
•Recycling is beneficial only if the cost of
reprocessing is recovered by the demand of
the product

  The energy saved from
recycling one aluminum
can will operate a
computer for THREE
hours.
Recycling one aluminum can
saves enough energy to run a
TV for three hours – or the
equivalent of a half a gallon of
gasoline.

A modern glass bottle
would take 4000 years
or more to decompose –
and even longer if it’s
in the landfill.

ADVANTAGES OF
RECYCLING
•It helps in conserving the natural resources
•Helps in reducing the pollution that may come up due to disposal of waste
materials
•Recycling helps to limit the amount of glass, paper and plastic that must be
produced
•Makes people environmentally aware
•It saves space in landfills. The items that we recycle are not biodegradable.
•By saving energy you are cutting down the amount of CO2 being added to the
greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere. So you are slowing down global
warming.

Reusing of waste
•Converting old pieces of cloth into
doormats, cushions etc
•Fly ash from power plant is used to
make cement substitute, bricks
•Many waste material serves as raw
material for handicrafts.

• It is less expensive to buy
used than new.
•When reusing materials,
instead of creating new
products from virgin
materials, there is less
burden on the economy.
•Reusing helps in making
some other usefu products

Governments initiative in waste
management
•Both central & state government takes up the
responsibility of sustaining the environment &
proper waste management.
•Implementing schemes & laws for environmental
protection.

Government initiatives (facts)
•Indian urban areas
generate approx 30
million tonnes of solid
waste & about 4400
million cubic meters
of liquid waste every
year
•Potentially 1700 mw
of power can be
generated from urban
& municipal waste and
about 1000 mw from
industrial waste

Governmental environmental
policy
•Not building large dams for
hydroelectric power generations.It leads
to submergence of normal land and
displacement of people.
•Checking degradation of land & water
through wasteland management
•Making laws of environmental
protection
•Conserving natural resources by making
reserved forests & biosphere reserves
THE ENVIRONMENT (PROTECTION) ACT, 1986

Disadvantages:

..Forests and wildlife are damaged in
the beginning of the project

..the original river is often diverted and
then down-river may be horribly
effected by the change in course
..Arable land is
eaten up by the
newly created lake.

Role of the government in improving the existing
technologies
•Using CNGs in the automobiles to reduce vehicular
pollution
• Setting up National waste
Management Council
•to manage solid waste

Strategies for waste management by the high-powered
commission(1995)
•Encouraging residents to segregate the waste
•Vehicle for transporting waste MSW(municipal solid
waste) to be covered so as not to litter & pollute the
environment
•Hazardous waste (management & handling)
•Banning the usage of plastics and polybags
•Bio-medical waste(management & handling) :
segregation, disposal, collection &treatment

Social
initiatives
•Involvement of Various
organizations & NGOs
creating awareness about
reduction & recycle
•Awareness programme
organized on the topics of
judicious use of resources &
products like electricity ,
water etc
•Using the services of the rag
pickers in segregating the
waste & help and train
them to convert organic
waste into
manure(organization: Stree
mukti Sangatna)
•Organizing exhibitions,
public meetings & rallies to
spread awareness on
recycling of products

Social initiatives
•Women have formed
association in
residential colonies.
They collect,
organize organic &
in-organic waste
separately & make
money by selling
compost
• voluntary organization
(EXNORA) in Chennai
has encouraged the
residents to join together
& employ rag pickers to
collect garbage at their
door step & transfer the
same to the landfill.

Did you know
that the state of
Maryland
generated
enough municipal
solid waste in
2000 to build a
wall 3ft. wide x
6ft. high and
3,839 miles long?
That is long
enough to go
from Baltimore to
Miami over 3.5
times.
More than 20,000,000 Hershey’s Kisses
are wrapped each day, using 133 square
miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable,
but not many people realize it.
One-third of the
water used in most
homes is flushed down
the toilet.
