What is a regular verb? A regular verb is a verb which takes an “ed” ending in the simple past and past participle form. Examples: ask asked look looked start started talk talked * There are thousands of regular verbs in English. 11

Regular Verbs – Follow The Rules A regular verb follows these rules when forming the simple past. 1. Add “ed” to the bare infinitive (the most basic form) of the verb. 2. For verbs ending in “e”, add “d”. 3. For verbs ending in “y”, change “y” to “ i ” and add “ed.” 4. For words ending in a vowel and then a consonant, double the consonant and add “ed” 12
