Sociology 6/10/2020 3 Sociology is the Combination of two words : Latin “ Socius ” – meaning “ companion ” and the Greek word “ logos ” – meaning “ the study of ” The term SOCIOLOGY was first used in 1780 by French essayist Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes (1748 -1836) and later by French thinker Auguste Comte. Sociology = “ the study of companionship, or social relations”. 5. 6/10/2020 5 Sociology and Education Relationship Education takes place in the society and is thus a social thing. Sociology Studies the structure & functions of social systems while education is one of the important functions of any social system. Education is the means for achieving the goals of sociology. (A Presentation to Rainbow International College, Dallu , Kathmandu) Emile Durkheim was the first person to point out the sociological approach to Education. Durkheim considered education , “to be essentially social in character and its functions and that as a result the theory of education relates more clearly to sociology than any other science.” Society and social milieu determine the ideal education realizes. Values and disciplines taught by education enables a person to assimilate in the society.

Sociology establishes the sociological standpoints to education. Education is understood when it is known for what society it is preparing pupils. Contd … Relationship Education is the laboratory and workshop of sociology Sociology develops methods and techniques to be utilized by educational system to attain its goals.

7. 6/10/2020 7 Contd … Relationship Sociology contributes greatly to the planning, execution, monitoring and evaluation of educational process. (A Presentation to Rainbow International College, Dallu , Kathmandu) Education helps to minimize the conflict among the different groups of people belonging to unequal Social S tratification by providing equal ability, understanding and opportunities. Education helps to minimize the diversity of forms and amount of social stratification though it cannot root out the stratification. Thus it supports the goal of sociology.

Education contributes significantly to provide opportunities to the “haves not” (Marx) or reduce the unfair control over the power or unjust distribution of power (Ralf Darendorf ) The study of society assists in the management of special education for special need group and implement inclusive education/ education for all.
