RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
TEMPERATURE OF A PLANET
AND THE SUN
Planets that do not have an
atmosphere
-Sunlight that reaches its surface
will cause the area that faces
the sun to be extremely hot, more
than 427°C
mercury
-The darker area is extremely
cold, and its temperature can
drop to -173°C
Planets that have an
atmosphere
EARTH
-has clouds that reflect
sunlight back into outer space
-atmosphere traps some of the
heat, which causes the
greenhouse effect
-has thick clouds that can reflect
sunlight back into
outer space
-atmospheric layers consist of mostly
carbon
dioxide which causes the greenhouse
effect
-more heat is trapped
-surface temperature can reach up to
462°C
VENUS
Mars
-the surface pressure is extremely
low compared to that of the Earth
(less than 1/100 of Earth's pressure)
-causing minimal effect on the
surface temperature
-Surface temperature fluctuates
between -143°C to 35°C
GIANT PLANETS
Jupiter, saturn, uranus and neptune
-surface of these planets
are covered in gas
-receive very little
sunlight
-surface temperatures
are extremely low
