Solar Energy
•Energy derived from the sun is a good
renewable energy source but very little is used
to do work so it is converted into other forms
for more use.
•- Solar cells, panels and furnaces converts
solar energy to other forms
•- Solar cells: solar energy electricity
(found in calculators, watches and satellites)
•- Solar panels: are painted black to trap heat.
Found on rooftops, used to heat flowing water
which can be used or stored.

Solar Furnace
•Solar furnace:
thousands of mirrors or
shiny curved metal
surfaces used to focus
energy onto a point
which becomes hot, the
heat can be used to
produce steam which is
channeled to power
stations.

The major disadvantage of solar
energy
•The amount of sunlight that arrives at the
earth’s surface is not constant. It depends on
location, time of day, time of year and
weather conditions.
•Large surface areas are required to collect
energy at a useful rate
•- It is expensive to collect& convert solar
energy into other forms of energy
Geothermal Energy
•This is the natural heat energy trapped
underground. It is carried to the surface by
steam & hot water which are used to turn
turbines driving generators to produce
electricity
•It is renewable b/c water is replenished by
rainfall & heat and is continuously produced
inside the earth. It can be found in volcanoes
and hot springs.

Tidal Energy
•Tidal energy is a direct result of tide shifting
from low to high.
•Tidal energy is used to turn turbines which
drive generators to produce electricity.

harnessed
Nuclear Energy
•Large amounts of heat is given off by nuclear
fission which takes place in a nuclear reactor.
•The heat energy is then used to convert water
into steam which drives steam turbines for
generating electricity
