Characteristics of a Report
Brief
Simple
Factual
Unbiased
M PRAHALLADA PGT ENGLISH NVS CENTRE
OF EXCELLENCE BANGALORE
5

Characteristics of Good News Report
•Brief-Why:News paper has to cover so many
areas and so much of News, hence it requires
lot of space, so you need to brief in reporting.
•Factual:only what you could see, what is
authentic, you cannot sit on judgement. Only
facts, no fiction
•Descriptive:Use more adjectives so that you
can describe the event effectively & efficiently.
M PRAHALLADA PGT ENGLISH NVS CENTRE
OF EXCELLENCE BANGALORE
6

•Use simple language: News paper is meant for
all people from President to Peon, so you
should reach everyone.
•No technical terminology/ Jargon: it is read by
even a layman, he must be able to
understand, so no technical jargon.
•Impersonal: avoid using ‘I’ ‘we’, ‘me’. ‘You’etc:
you are not supposed to be biased, nothing
you should take it personal, nor you should be
judgmental.
M PRAHALLADA PGT ENGLISH NVS CENTRE
OF EXCELLENCE BANGALORE
7

•answer the questions to ‘when’, ‘where’,
‘why’, ‘what’, ‘who’ and ‘how’.
M PRAHALLADA PGT ENGLISH NVS CENTRE
OF EXCELLENCE BANGALORE
8

•Non Committal:No Personal Responsibility: you
can’t blame anyone nor appreciate anyone. You
can’t take any personal responsibility, nor you can
commit anything to anyone as News Reporter.
•Use more of Passive Voice: by using more passive
structures, you can be non committal, you can
avoid personalization, and you can reduce the
number of words so that you can give more
information. Sometimes subject implied, we need
not have to mention, that’s how we can be brief.
M PRAHALLADA PGT ENGLISH NVS CENTRE
OF EXCELLENCE BANGALORE
9

Format of News Paper Report
•Layout of New Paper Report
•Catchword:must be attractive, must, catch the
attention of readers, and create curiosity among
readers. It must be very brief and crisp.
•Headlines: Brief, crispy, attractive-Headlines
must be summery of report.
•Byline/ source: the author of the report or from
which agency it has been taken.
•Date and Place of Report: it need not necessarily
the date of event and place of event . Should be
the date and place of reporting.

M PRAHALLADA PGT ENGLISH NVS CENTRE
OF EXCELLENCE BANGALORE
10

•First paragraph: must be the explanation of
Headlines and catchwords.
•What, where, when, who must be answered in
first paragraph.
•Facts and figures in the following paragraphs.
•Last but one paragraph:Opinion of the Public
•Last paragraph: Opinion of the Press.
M PRAHALLADA PGT ENGLISH NVS CENTRE
OF EXCELLENCE BANGALORE

•It is a home to abandoned pets, rescued animals and the
ones injured on the streets. There were many old animals
as well. It was astounding to see the quality of care the
animals are being given. They have a family-like
environment for them. This helps them to heal faster and
stay happy. The animal home has all the facilities ranging
from well-equipped medical room to a veterinary surgeon.
Regular check-ups of those unwell by a team of veterinary
specialists are carried out. The surroundings are animal-
friendly as well. They are not being ruthlessly kept in cages.
They have green surroundings with enough space for them
to play and nurture.
•Mahatma Gandhi Animal Care Home is doing a mind-
blowing job by understanding and fulfilling the needs of
those who can’t speak for themselves. The experience was
an overwhelming one.
