Reported Speech

Reported SENTENCES We use reported speech to tell another person what someone said. We have to use the word TELL + an object pronoun (that) or the word SAID (that) ‘’that’’ is optional Mary: ‘’ I like shopping’’ Reported speech: Mary said (that) she liked shopping

Tenses Present simple → past simple Present continuous → past continuous future (will) → would Past simple → past perfect present perfect → past perfect can't → couldn’t may → might must → had to ´´ I like shopping’’ → She said that she liked shopping ‘’ I’m leaving tomorrow ’’ → He told her that he was leaving the next day ‘’ I’ll always love you ’’ → He said that he would always love me ‘’ I passed the exam’’ → She told me ‘’ I’ve forgotten my keys’’ → ‘’ I can’t come’’ → ‘’ I may be late’’ → ‘’ I must go’’ →

Some modal verbs stay the same (could, might or should) We usually have to change pronouns When you report what someone said very soon after they said it, the tenses often stay the same as in the original sentence Adam: ‘’ I can’t come tonight’’ → I’ve just spoken to Adam and he said that he can’t come tonight Jack: ‘’ I really enjoyed my trip’’ → Jack told me that he really enjoyed his trip

If you report what someone said on a different day or in a different place, some words can change, for example: tomorrow → the next day here → there this → that ‘’ I’ll meet you here tomorrow ’’ → he said he’d meet me there the next day

Reported QUESTIONS The tenses change as in reported statements When a questions doesn’t begin with a question word, we add if or weather We have to change the word order to S + V and not use DO/DID ‘’ Are you married?’’ → She asked him if he was married ‘’ Did Lucy phone ?’’ → He asked me whether Lucy had phoned . ‘’ What ’s your name?’’ → I asked him what his name was ‘’Where do you live ?’’ → She asked me where I lived

Report the following dialogue Man : Where do you live? W oman : I live in the city centre Woman : What are you doing in the evening? Man : I’m going to the cinema Man : Will you be at home at eight o’clock? Woman : No, I’m going out M : Where did you buy your bag? W : I bought it online W : Have you seen the new James Bond film? M : I’ve seen it twice! M : Can I try on the jacket? W : The changing rooms are over there
