About This Presentation

reported speech grammar drills

Slide Content

If we report what another person has said, we usually do not use the speaker’s exact words (direct speech), but reported speech (indirect) .

We often use reported speech to: 1. Give someone a telephone message. For example: Maha said that she couldn’t come today because she was sick. 2 . Tell someone news that we heard from someone else. For example: Nora told me that Amal graduated. 3. To repeort something that happened earlier. For example: Ahmad said that the other driver ran the red light and hit his car.

How Do we use Reported Speech? When we use Reported Speech, we are usually talking about something that happened in The Past. *Therefore, Verbs usually change to the past.

For example: am / is become are would could were had was becomes become becomes becomes Have / has can will

When transforming statements, check whether you have to change: pronouns present tense verbs (3rd person singular) place and time expressions tenses (backshift) What else should we keep in mind?

Example direct speech “I speak English.” English reported speech He said that he spoke English.

In Reported Speech you should use this structure: Someone said ( that ) …………………… Someone told me ( that ) …………………… Or:

Ahmad told me that he ………. not happy at his job anymore and he…………………. he …………. quit. I’m not happy at my job anymore and I think I will quit. was thought would

Be careful with pronouns: Ameera said that ………… sister was coming to visit ………… soon. My sister is coming to visit me soon. her her
