Reported speech We sometimes don’t need to change the verb tense: For scientific facts / situations that are true: “Pianos are made of wood”, Tom said. Tom said (that) pianos are made of wood. When somebody just said something, so it’s still true: “ I will be there in 5’”, Tom said. Tom has just texted and said (that) he will be there in 5’.
