EAST ASIA China One of the most cradles civilization. The preservation of the Chinese language (spoken & written) has made the immeasurable prolonged existence of their literary traditions possible.
a. Du Fu Also known as Tu Fu Greatest Chinese poet of all time “The Ballad of the Army Cat”, about conscription and with hidden satire that speaks of the noticeable luxury of the court.
b. Li Po Also known as “Li Bai” Competitor of Du Fu as China’s greatest poet. Romantic in his personal life and his poetry. His works is known for conversational tone and vivid imagery. “Alone and Drinking Under the Moon”
c. Wang Wei A poet, painter, musician & statesman during the Tang Dynasty. Established founder of the respected Southern school of painter-poets
d. Mo Yan A factionist who won the 2012 Nobel Prize for Literature. 1 st novel was “Red Sorghum” & still his best known work. It tells the story of Chinese battling Japanese intruders as well as each other during the 1930s.
e. Yu Hua World acclaimed short story writer & considered as a champion for Chinese meta-fictional or postmodernist writing. Novel: To Live Describes the struggles endured by the son of a wealthy land-owner.

2. Korea Korean’s literary tradition is greatly influenced by China’s cultural dominance. Korean poets wrote literary pieces in Classical Chinese poetry. Hangul – Korean’s distinct writing system & national alphabet that gave birth to a new wave of Korean literature. The themes present in the literary works: alienation, conscience, disintegration, & self-identity.
a.Ch’oe Nam- Seon Considered as prominent historian, pioneering poet, & publisher in the Korean literature. Leading member of the modern literary movement & became notable in pioneering modern Korean poetry. “The Ocean of the Youth” – aimed to produce cultural reform.
b. Yi Kwang Su The one who launched the modern literary movement together with Ch’oe Nam- Seon . A novelist & wrote the first Korean novel “The Heartless”
c. Kim Ok Korean Poet Included in the early modernism movement of Korean poetry. “The Dance of Agony” – first Korean collection of translation from Western Poetry.
d. Yun Hunggil South Korean novelist. Wrote the classic novel “ Changma ” (The Rainy Spell) that on a post-war family with two grandmothers and their shared grandson
e. Pak Kyongni A South Korean poet & novelist. Wrote the Korean masterpiece & internationally acclaimed 21-volume epic novel T’oji (The Land).
Japan
Has a rich & unique literary history. HAIKU - World-renowned poetic genre(short descriptive with 17 syllables) Noh – diverse forms of theatre. Traditional Japanese theatrical form & one of the oldest extant theatrical form in the world.
Kabuki – traditional Japanese popular drama with singing & dancing performed in a highly stylized manner. Japanese literature reflects simple yet complex, imperfect yet abounding with beauty.
a. Abe Kobo Japanese novelist & playwright Pseudonym of Abe Kimifusa . Wrote the best-known play “ Tomodachi ” (friends) , which is a story with dark humor, reveals the relationship with the others. Won the Akutagawa Award for his short novel Kabe (The Wall)
