Journal Club HS 2135 RGU OT 21/22

Journal clubs are educational meetings where individuals meet regularly to critically evaluate recent articles in the scientific literature. They have often been cited as a bridge between research and practice, as they encourage the application of research in clinical practice. T he earliest reference to a journal club found is described by Sir James Paget who, in the mid-1800s, described a group at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, as a “kind of club . . . a small room over a baker's shop near the hospital-gate, where we could sit and read the journals”. (BMJ 2007)

Five reasons for running a journal club To highlight new findings. To teach practitioners how to search for interesting articles representing the best evidence to inform clinical practice. To encourage practitioners to read and appraise publications critically and give them the ability to do so. To encourage practitioners to do applied clinical research and to show them how. T o improve debating skills, demonstrate leadership skills, and aid peer mentorship. (Aronson 2017)

It is often assumed that if an article is published in a journal it must be of quality; this is not always the case. It has been argued that most, "if not in fact 99%, of published articles belong in the bin, and should certainly not be used to inform practice" (Greenhalgh 2014 p. 28). They may use "inappropriate designs, unrepresentative samples, small samples, incorrect methods of analysis, and faulty interpretation" (Altman 1994 p. 283). When reading journal articles and studies it is important to ask yourself if the research is methodologically sound, relevant, is of value to the subject area and patients, has minimized the effects of potential biases and is reported in a clear way.

That’s why Critical Appraisal is important

I enjoyed the paper! Me too! …
