Analysing the established forms of
production of videos, digipaks and
homepages in your chosen genre

Without looking at your notes/blog, how
many music genres can you remember/
Individual (2mins)
Note: If you didn’t do this last year
make sure to take this list and put
it into a wordle on your blog

What are the two types of conventions used
within genre?
Technical
Symbolic

Technical Techniques
how genre is conveyed using technical equipment such as the way the
way camera is used, sound effects the pace and style of editing.
For example: you will have more close ups of the face and body in pop
genres while rock and indie will use these shot types to show
instruments being played.
R&B will have longer shot durations, while indie will be quick and fast
paced.

Symbolic conventions relate to mise-en-scene,
costume, props, location/setting, colours,
lighting, make up, arrangement of band
members (singer at the front to show he/she
is most important), performance.

The audience can become familiar with a
particular genre, as they get use to
recognizing the different conventions within
a genre.
 It provides a structure that the audience can
understand.
To ensure the lyrics of the song fit in with
the video, of how we’d expect it to be.

Although genres may appear to shift and develop
randomly over time, you can think of it a bit like
biological evolution where mutations that prove
successful are inherited and lead to adaptation. In
the music industry the process involves successful
acts being cloned in some quite blatant ways such
as?.....
Sometimes successful formulae are slightly
adapted to prevent them from becoming overly
repetitive (but still a safe-ish bet) such as?......

Acts and formulas that are similar to previously
popular + commercially successful acts are more
likely to be hired by record companies seeking to
make profits. This is seen to be less risky than
investing in developing more individual/original
acts, which may cost more to develop and offer
less certainty of attracting a large (profitable)
audience.

•Generic Ingredients – what are the different
elements that are included e.g. for videos in this
genre is there normally a performance? Lip sync?
Narrative?
•Technical conventions– is there a specific visual style
that is expected within the genre – particular style of
camerawork? Editing? Lighting? Use of colours?
Imagery? Use of particular settings/locations?
Costume?
•Symbolic conventions- Are there similar locations?
Positing? Facial expressions? How have these been
used to represent ideology?
•Generic structure – is there a specific way in which
the ingredients are arranged/organised [more
relevant to websites and digipaks but also to videos
e.g. in pop videos the performance and CUs of the
artist will nearly always be used over the key lines of
the chorus] – Why do you think this is?

As a group agree what genre your song/artist
belongs to and write this down. Use google,
wikipedia etc, which will give you a guide
Find FOUR similar acts working in the SAME
genre, agree these and write their names down
Analyse the videos, of these acts, noting
similarities in the content, style and structure of
the products – e.g. what is traditionally included
within the videos, what visual styles are used,
how are the different elements structured
(organised)?
MAKE SCREENGRABS as you carry out your
research and write bullet points to demonstrate
what the conventions are
Is there a typical star image for artists within
this genre?

As a group (research):
Identify the genre and the four similar artists.
Make notes on similarities of the videos
Individual (the write up):
Screen grabs and what is traditionally included
within the videos, what visual styles are used, how
are the different elements structured (organised)?
What star theory does this link too?

You will need most of this lesson to compare
the 4 music videos. But once you have done
this you will also need to look at the album
covers and homepage/social media of the
four similar artists/bands
Note prep:
Your prep for next week shall be to
complete this genre convention research of
the music videos, Digi packs and websites.

To analyse similarities between products you will need
to look at them side by side e.g print out four digipaks
(from four DIFFERENT acts) in colour and compare them
For each media form (video, digipak and website + any
social media they use) analyse four products,
identifying the conventions and considering their
purpose – why is it conventional, what does it offer the
audience that is appealing, what does it ‘say’ about
who the act is (star image)?
Present your work as a Google slide It is very important
that you present the conventions of each media form
ONE at a time, also deal with each of the conventions
ONE at a time or it will become very confusing

homepages/

Title of genre and what your looking at
The 4 artists/bands
The videos
Comparing same/differences in symbolic
conventions
Comparing same/differences in technical
conventions
Digipak comparisons and similarities
What social media do they use? How do they
use it?
Star image across the campaign

This should be the biggest and most
impressive post yet!
Completing this to a high standard will help
you meet the following marking criteria
16-20 ‘Excellent research into similar
products’

Dyers star theory- How the star image has
been constructed
Key terminology- when discussing
connotations and technical areas.
How the target audience has been addressed

What have you manged to complete? Looking
at the task list what do you have left to do?
What are your targets for next week?
