Respiration in organisms Parneet Kaur Roll no. 401323 B.Ed 3 rd sem. Life science

What is respiration? The transfer of oxygen from the outside environment to cells within tissues , as well as removal of carbon dioxide in the opposite way is referred to as respiration. OR It is the process of releasing energy from the breakdown of food.

Why do we respire? All the living organisms are made up of small microscopic units called the cells. These cells have different functions to perform in these organisms such as digestions , respiration, transportation and excretion. The energy present in the food gets released when the organisms respire or breathe.

Respiratory system All living organisms are made up of number of cells. Each of these cells requires oxygen to break down food and obtain energy. This intake of air rich oxygen is the first step and is called inhalation.

Breathing It is the process in which air rich in oxygen is taken inside and air rich in CO2 is given out , with the help of respiratory organs . Thus ,breathing involves two steps which take place alternately. Inhalation : Taking in of air rich in oxygen into our body is called inhalation. Exhalation : Giving out air rich in carbon dioxide from our body to the external environment is called exhalation.

Respiratory system in animals

Respiration in humans Respiration occurs in lungs which are present in our chest, just beneath the lungs there is dome shaped muscle called diaphragm when diaphragm contracts oxygen rich air is pulled into the lungs.

Passage of air and exchange of gases Air is exchanged in alveoli, from oxygen is picked up by blood and transported to all parts of the body . CO2 is picked from all parts of body and transported by body to lungs. When we exhale the CO2 rich air follows the reverse route finally moving out through the nose.

Revision The respiratory system of the humans have several parts: nasal chamber , pharynx, larynx , trachea ,bronchi, lungs, diaphgram . Respiration in humans starts with the breathing of all through the nose leading to the oxygen to be transferred into the bloodstream by the lungs. This oxygen is delivered to all the cells, which uses them to burn glucose and generate energy. The energy present present in the food gets released when the organisms respire or breathe. Respiration in other organisms is carried out by special organs Frogs and earthworm use their moist skin, fishes use gills and insects have spiracles. Hence , respiration is an important biological process to derive energy.
