Trachea/ windpipe - The tube between the lungs and pharynx. Pharynx - Serves respiratory and digestive systems. Lungs - The spongy organs found in the ribcage which are responsible for the absorption and release of gases (O 2 and CO 2) Ribcage - The bones that surround and protect your lungs. Pleural fluid - The fluid that covers each lunch and protects the lungs against friction from the ribs. Diaphragm - This is the muscle that separates thoracic and abdominal cavities, it contracts and relaxes to allow and push air out of the lungs.
