Times Higher Education World University The  Times Higher Education  World University Rankings are the only global performance tables that judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: Teaching  (the learning environment) 30% Research  (volume, income and reputation) 30% Citations  (research influence) 30% International outlook  (staff, students and research) 7.5% Industry income  (knowledge transfer) 2.5%

CWUR Ranking Criteria 14 CWUR uses seven objective and robust indicators grouped into four areas to rank the world’s universities: 1)  Education : based on the academic success of a university’s alumni, measured relative to the university's size (25%) 2)  Employability : based on the professional success of a university’s alumni, measured relative to the university's size (25%) 3)  Faculty : measured by the number of faculty members who have received top academic distinctions (10%) 4)  Research: i ) Research Output: measured by the total number of research papers (10%) ii) High-Quality Publications: measured by the number of research papers appearing in top-tier journals (10%) iii) Influence: measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals (10%) iv) Citations: measured by the number of highly-cited research papers (10%)

QS World University Ranking 15 Academic reputation  (worth 40% of the overall score) Based on a global survey of academics, who are asked to identify the leading institutions in their field. Data Sources of Global Ranking Systems 32 Many global rankers, e. g. ARWU, THE , U- Multirank , use ‘ Thomson Reuters Web of Science’ and ‘Thomson Reuters Incite’ . Only QS draws its data from SCOPUS, a product of Elsevier , a Dutch-based data broker. Website of Universities Students, Professors, Stakeholders, Survey Social Media. Google Scholar.

Improving rankings: an option? 37 Improvements will not come from extending 5 distant proxies to 25 – they will still remain proxies... Improve coverage of teaching – most probably through measuring learning outcomes. Lift biases, eradicate flaws of bibliometric indicators: field, language, regional, but first of all – address non-journal publications properly! Rankings often claim that they help students to make their choices – but the student body is highly diverse, which students and what do they need? Is this what is measured? Rankings cover only top institutions but impact all universities – can rankings be changed to address a larger number?

Improving rankings ( cont ): Recent Developments 38 EC WG Report on the assessment of university-based research ( AUBR ): Analysis of research indicators & their suitability, proposals for a methodology U-Map uses indicators that characterise the focus and intensity of various aspects in HEIs U- Multirank - a multidimensional ranking including all aspects of an HEI’s work – education, research, knowledge exchange and regional involvement. No composite score is produced. OECD’s AHELO project attempts to compare HEIs internationally on the basis of learning outcomes 3 testing instruments are being developed: for measuring generic skills & discipline-specific skills, in economics and engineering.

Can I rise in the rankings? 39 In summary, many factors contribute to your rank, with varying levers impacting where your university ultimately lands. You may invest time in checking the accuracy of your data, re-evaluating your strategy, or benchmarking your regional and worldwide peers yet not see substantial growth. Achieving a rise in the rankings is not a straightforward path, and there are no guarantees. However, the time you put into understanding and participating in university rankings can lead to a more accurate re fl ection and deeper understanding of your university overall. To do this, we encourage a two-pronged approach. Make sure the source of bibliometric data for your institution ’ s research is accurate re fl ection. In the case of QS and THE, this data comes from Scopus Gather deeper insights into the levers driving your university rankings and those of other universities using analytic tools such as SciVal . Make Your Institute more visible to the world

The risks of overemphasising rankings 40 Rankings encourage universities to improve their scores. Universities are strongly tempted to improve performance specifically in areas that are measured in rankings, e.g. research in sciences and medicine. By concentrating funds and efforts on rankings universities pay less attention to issues not ‘rewarded by global rankings, e.g. quality of teaching, regional involvement, widening access, lifelong learning, etc. Similarly rankings threaten to undermine other policy objectives

The Big Picture: Sources of Research Metrics IRIS – Institutional Research Information System web-based system that enables researchers and academic staff to create, update and maintain their own web profiles/CV’s and showcase their research expertise and research achievements to a global audience Links to WOS automatically Scopus - bibliographic database containing abstracts and citations for over 60m academic journal articles since 1996. Encompasses over 21.5k peer reviewed journals and 130k books. Scopus offers author profiles which cover affiliations, number of publications and their bibliographic data, references, and details on the number of citations each published document has received. Ensure you use a consistent Author name/ID SciVal links to profiles in Scopus. Can combine profiles into Schools, Research Groups and present visual research performance, benchmark relative to peers, develop collaborative partnerships and analyze research trends at an institutional or department or subject level. Incites based on Web of Science (WOS) – similar to Scopus but more scientific and uses a different database of journals. Web of Science encompasses over 50,000 scholarly books, 12,000 journals and 160,000 conference proceedings Altmetrics : measure of online engagement and impact/reach of a paper/person. non-traditional metrics proposed as an alternative to more traditional citation impact metrics - Based off a very broad group of metrics ( eg . Viewed, Discussed, Saved, Cited, Recommended) capturing alternative measures of impact a paper or work can have. Altmetric tracks a range of sources to capture and collate this activity. 41 By Claire O’Connor
