INTRODUCTION In the Indian literary theory carry out a substained analysis of how meaning is constitude in a language forms anddevices. The riti is theory of language of literature. The word Riti was first used by BHARAT’S NATYASHASTRA itself under the republic of Vrtti
MEANING OF RITI In simply Riti means style, method . According to VAMANA, “Riti or mode of expression constitute the soul of poetry. “ Two other words used for Riti are : 1) MARGA 2) VRTTI
It was Vamana who first developed it into a theory of VisistaPadaracanariti ’. In the very simple words formation of or arrangement of marked constructions is riti. Vamana's investigation into the nature of a Kāvya is known as theory of Riti. Later ANANDVARDHANA ( ninth century ) distinguished these styles on the basis of the use of particular kind of compounds . DANDIN uses the term Marga and talks of two margas. MAMMATA designates the different modes as vrttis.
The two bodies of the kavya vamana conceived of two Riti 1) SHABDA RITI 2) ARTHA RITI They are the reflection of vital Principal the soul of the kavya. Riti is VAMANA’s greatest contribution to literary theory.
Riti/styles are defined by gunas ( excellence ) as well. Riti maybe called ‘ DICTION’ particularly when guna/dosa become part of discussion. But Riti is much more than just diction. Basically it is a theory that handles the psychosomatic fitness of language of speakers, themes and sentiments and therefore becomes a study of craftsmanship and psychology of speech.
CONCLUSION Vamana defined Bharata and Dandin them away suits his theory of Riti and started that all the gunas existed clearly and fully in the Vaidarbha Riti while only a few of them existed in other Ritis.
