River 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 3 A  river  is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river . Dam A  dam  is a barrier that stops or restricts the flow of water or underground streams . Barrage A barrage is a type of low-head, diversion dam which consists of a number of large gates that can be opened or closed to control the amount of water passing through the structure

Introduction The  Jhelum River  is a river of north western India and eastern Pakistan. It is the westernmost of the five rivers of Punjab, and passes through Jhelum District. It is a tributary of the Chenab River and has a total length of about 725 kilometres 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 5

Dams and barrages Water control structures are being built as a result of the Indus Basin Project, including the following : Mangla Dam Rasul Barrage Trimmu Barrage 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 6

Mangla Dam The  Mangla Dam   is a multipurpose dam located on the Jhelum River in the Mirpur District of Pakistan controlled Kashmir  The Mangla Dam components include a reservoir, main embankment, intake embankment, main spillway, emergency spillway, intake structures, 5 tunnels and a power station . Surface area of the dam is 97 sq  mi. 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 7

Rasul Barrage Rasul Barrage  is a  barrage  on the River Jehlum between Jhelum District and  Mandi Bahauddin District.  It is situated 72 km downstream of Mangla Dam . Rasul Barrage is used to control water flow in the River Jhelum for irrigation and flood control purposes. Water is diverted from this point to Chenab River at Qadirabad through Rasul-Qadirabad link canal, then ultimately transferred to Sulemanki Barrage on the Sutlej River. 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 9

Trimmu Barrage Trimmu Barrage, constructed in 1939 some 90 km from Mari Shah Sakhira town. It is situated downstream of the confluence of the River Jhelum and River Chenab. It has maximum discharge capacity of 645,000  ft³/s. Trimmu Barrage is used to control water flow into the River Chenab for irrigation and flood control purposes. It also uses to protect the city of Jhang from floods. 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 11

Canals The Upper Jhelum Canal The Rasul-Qadirabad Link Canal The Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 13

The Upper Jhelum Canal The  Upper Jhelum Canal  is located on two rivers Jehlum and Chenab in the north of  Punjab. It runs from Mangla Dam to the Chenab River. Floodwater  drain through the Upper Jhelum Canal into the Jhelum. 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 14

The Rasul-Qadirabad Link Canal Rasul Qadirabad Link Canal is next to Qila Atar Singh and is located in Punjab, Pakistan. It  runs from the Rasul Barrage to the Chenab river. Rasul Qadirabad Link Canal has a length of 47.25 kilometres . Rasul- Qadirabad link canal has the second largest water discharge capacity after Chashma-Jhelum link canal. It has 538-m³/s discharge capacity. 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 15

The Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal The Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal runs from the Chashma Barrage on the Indus River to the Jhelum river downstream of Rasul Barrage. This is 40 kilometers from Mari Shah Sakhira town . It has a discharge capacity of some 21,700 cubic feet per second . 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 16

Dams There are two dams on Neelam river and both of them under construction. Kishanganga dam in Jammu and Kashmir. Neelam Jhelum dam in Azad Kashmir. 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 21

Kishanganga dam In the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the construction work on the 330 MW  Kishanganga. The 330 MW Kishanganga hydro-electric power project involves damming of Kishanganga or Neelam River and the proposed 37 meter reservoir will submerge some parts of the Gurez valley of  Kashmir. The water of Kishen Ganga River will be diverted through a 24km tunnel dug through the mountains to Bandipore where it will join the  Wular Lake  and then Jhelum River. 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 22

Neelam Jhelum dam Pakistan is constructing the 969 MW  Neelam–Jhelum Hydropower Plant; the country has placed the project in the hands of a Chinese company(CGGC). The Neelam Jhelum dam will be 47m tall and 125m long composite dam (Concrete gravity + Rock fill). Dam is designed for the discharge of 280 cumecs and the storage capacity is 10.0 million m 3 . A 43km tunnel is constructed which converges the water to the Jhelum river. 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 23

Islam Barrage Islam Barrage  is a barrage on the River Sutlej in  Hasilpur  It is about 15 kilometres north of Hasilpur and about 7.5 kilometres south of Luddan on the  Vehari-Hasilpur road . 1650 feet long with design discharge of 300,000 cusecs, it has two off taking larger canals which irrigate 689,000 acres of land in Southern Punjab and 700, 000 acres in the former Bahawalpur state . Mailsi Canal (5400 cusecs) arises from its right Bank and Bahawal Canal (5400 cusecs) from the left. A third smaller canal is called Qaim Canal (558 cusecs) also arising from the left bank. 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 28

Sulemanki Headworks Sulemanki Headworks  is a headworks on the River Sutlej near Okara district This headworks is located about a mile from the Indian border on the Sutlej River. From here originate three major canals which supply irrigation water to a large area in Southern Punjab and the Bahawalnagar district. The Upper Pakpattan Canal arises from its right bank and two canals arise from the left. The canals on the left bank are Fordwah and Eastern Sadiqia Canal.  The later canal runs along the Pakistan-India border. 10-10-2017 Chenab college of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala 30
