What is the problem ? Over 5% of the world's population – or 430 million people(63 million in India) – require rehabilitation to address their disabling hearing loss (including 34 million children). It is estimated that by 2050 over 700 million people – or 1 in every 10 people – will have disabling hearing loss. This is one of a big problem that needs to be solved.
There are about 70 million deaf-mute people which is about 1 % of total population. There are many problems deaf-mute people face. One of the greatest problems is understanding sign language. Deaf-mute people use sign language which the common people do not understand and the language of common people is not understood by the deaf-mute. Hearing aid devices are present in the market but are too costly for the common people.
There is a boy named Shubh who is a part of team RoboRebels . His grandfather has hearing problems. He had problems to communicate with the common people. He had to buy a hearing aid device as there was no option. It was too costly. After buying it, it became easy to communicate but within 6 months it went bad. He asked Shubh for the solution. Shubh told us the problem. Jagadhaesh told to use the learnings of our robotic class and make something innovative. Soon Navya came with an idea to create a sign language. All of us created a robot called sign bot one month later. It converted sign language to text, speech and vice versa. This is also used for learning sign language. Just like that there are many problems of deafness in the world that need to be solved.
What is the market potential? More than 1.5 billion people worldwide are currently affected by hearing loss in at least one ear.In India 63 million people are affected. Around 430 million people worldwide require rehabilitation for disabling hearing loss. Approximately 13% of adults ages 18 and older experience some difficulty hearing even when using a hearing aid.
