ROLE OF CLASSROOM
EDUCATION IN ERADICATING
GENDER INEQUALITY

GENDER INEQUALITY
Gender inequality refers to unequal
treatment or perceptions of
individuals wholly or partly due to
their gender.

Gender equality in schools is not only about equal
numbers of girls and boys in classrooms, it is also
about equal opportunities and avenues available to
both resulting in equal participation and
achievements.

Schools should avoid negative gender role
stereotyping in any form and should promote
both girls and boys for all types of vocational
courses and subjects.

Schools need to promote and nurture safe and secure
environment especially for girls so that they can
exercise their constitutional right to education.

Recognize, promote and display the contribution of
both women and men in nation building, art, culture,
science, sports and various fields by means of equal
display of pictures and information on both women
and men achievers and contributors

Use gender-neutral language

Avoid stereotyping children

Classroom interaction should not
encourage gender stereotyping.

Try not to assign classroom tasks that
traditionally relate to a specific
gender

Provide a wide range of diverse
stories about the genders in non-
stereotyped roles.

Always use non-gender specific terms
when referring to occupations.

Be inclusive of a child/children who identifies
as another gender to the one they were
assigned at birth.

Promoting equity in the classroom does not
necessarily mean treating all students equally,
it also means giving some students more
encouragement to perform in class or structuring
your class in ways that promote greater
participation from a wider number of students.
