ROLE OF MEDIA TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHING AND LEARNING AGRICULTURE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS TO ENHANCE FOOD SECURITY IN BUSIA COUNTY, KENYA

Background information The world is moving rapidly into digital media and information, the role of ICT in education therefore is becoming more vital. In education set up, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play a number of significant roles in education. Such roles include; Developing graduates and citizens with required information in the society, improving educational outcomes, enhancing and improving the quality of teaching and learning ( Flecknoe , 2002 ). The key concern of education is to help improve agriculture as well as enable the learner to achieve the desired goals hoped for. It is of no doubt that education can bring positive changes in the human society, for this to be realized, potentials of education have to be taped in a balanced way for development to occur.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION CONT… The importance of ICT in education cannot be stressed enough. The introduction of technology in the educational field has made the process of learning and knowledge sharing a more interactive and pleasurable experience. ( Manali Oak 2012 ). However, in Kenya, Busia county the case is different, as the use of media technology in schools is still limited. This study therefore will explore the use of media technology to teach agriculture in schools as a panacea to food security.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The commonly used methods of teaching in secondary schools are; the lecture method, class discussions, demonstration, class experiments, problem solving, tours and field trips ( Munyao et al., 2020), these methods have been used without blending them with media technology. This could therefore limit the skills and knowledge that could be reinforced by use media technology. More over with the emergence of technological advancement, digital learning is on the rise especially in the education sector ( R. Toplis and M. Allen., 2012). Agriculture is an hands on subject which could be taught better when incorporated with the use of media, however the use of media is still farfetched from the reality in most schools and Busia schools being no exceptional. The effect of this could be seen in poor retention of knowledge as most concepts are taught in abstract form. Further the students end not practicing the subject as a result of limited knowledge. SThis study therefore will evaluate the use of media technology in teaching agriculture in secondary schools in Busia County.

OBJECTIVES General objective The general objective of this study will be to analyze the role of media technology in teaching and learning agriculture in secondary schools in Busia , Kenya. Specific objectives of the study 1. Determine the effect of media technology on the students’ academic performance 2. Assess various media technologies used in teaching agriculture and the extent to which they are used. 3. Assess how media technology can help solve food insecurity

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Use of media in learning agriculture techniques and acquiring skills through various practicals carried out in the class and school farms are the basis for knowledge gained. According to Isangedighi (2007),exposure to training is important if learning must take place. Information generated by this study will help the government and other stakeholders in the food security domain to make informed decisions concerning the integration of media technology in learning and teaching Agriculture.

METHODOLOGY Study site The study will be conducted in Busia County which was purposely chosen because media adoption is limited Research design The research design that will help out in getting the data is use of survey research design where investigations sought to establish the association between media technology blended in teaching and learning Agriculture and food security. It involves collection of information from sample individuals through their responses to questions. Sampling The sampling procedure to be used in this study is based on multi-stage random sampling .This is a sampling method where the entire area is divided into hierarchical sub- areas in a descending order of magnitude. This sampling frame is important in getting a representative sample from large area by accounting for variations in each level. Data collection This study will use questionnaires .
