Solvent and Solution

Slide Content

Role of the solute and solvent in a solution

Learning Competency: I dentify the role of the solute and solvent in a solution

ACTIVITY 1: Sugar and Water Experiment : Objective: To observe sugar dissolving in water. Materials: Clear glass, water, sugar, spoon .

Activity: Fill the glass with water, add a teaspoon of sugar, and stir. Ask students to watch as the sugar (solute) disappears into the water (solvent), forming a solution.

ACTIVITY 2: Colorful Solutions :

ACTIVITY 3: Temperature Test Objective: To learn how temperature affects solubility. Materials: Warm water, cold water, sugar, two clear glasses .

Activity : Add sugar to both warm and cold water. Observe which one dissolves the sugar faster, discussing the effect of temperature on the solvent’s ability to dissolve the solute.

What is a solution?

A solution is what you get when the solute has completely dissolved in the solvent. So, the sweet water you drink is the solution

SOLUTION It is a mixture of a solvent and a solute.

What is a SOLVENT?

The solvent is what does the dissolving. It’s like the water that dissolves the sugar to make the sweet water.

Example: Water

What is a SOLUTE ?

The solute is what gets dissolved. Think of it like the sugar you put into water to make sweet water.

Example: Sugar Salt Coffee

Two Types of SOLUTE

SOLUBLE And INSOLUBLE

SOLUBLE – water loving solute. (can be dissolved in water) Example : sugar , salt, coffee, milk powder

Example: Sand, paper, oil, rubber, wood INSOLUBLE – water FEARING solute . ( cannot be dissolved in water)

Activity Time

SOLUBLE or INSOLUBLE

Determine whether the substance given is soluble or insoluble.

Salt (NaCl) Sugar (Sucrose) Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) Ethanol (Alcohol) Coffee

Potassium Nitrate (Saltpeter) Ammonium Chloride Honey Detergents Acetic Acid (Vinegar)

Sand (Silicon Dioxide) Flour Oil (Cooking or Motor Oil) Lead Chloride (PbCl2) Glass

Gold (Au) Silver (Ag) Pebbles Wood Plastic

ASSIGNMENT : List down at least 10 soluble and 10 insoluble that can be found in your house .

BRING: Salt or Sugar Tablespoon 2 glasses
