Introduction Application Types Parts & Mechanism Advantage and Disadvantage Conclusion References Question & Answer CONTENT
Rotary tablet press is a mechanical device that unlike the single punch tablet press. Tooling station helps in compress granules/powder mixture into tablets. Upper and lower punches leaving the powder granules to be compressed in the middle . It was developed to increase the output Of tablets. Capacity of a rotary tablet press depends on rotation speed and number of stations on the press. INTRODUCTION [1,2]
These equipment produce tablets for various industries; the most extensive application of rotary tablet presses is pharmaceuticals , medical. Even though the pharmaceutical industry is the biggest recipient of tablet compression machines, there are a variety of high-speed industrial rotary presses. The machines are particularly for a range of uses, such as nuclear fuels, hygiene and body care, detergents, catalysts, consumables, powder metallurgy . [3] APPLICATION
Types of Tablet compression machines Single punch tablet presses utilize single-sided compression to make tablets. Multi station punch machine use double-sided compression. Single punch tablet press compression cycles do not have a dwell time. Multi station punch machine typically use a punch head flat which enables a dwell time as the punch passes under the compression roller. Single station punch machine Multi station punch machine Single station means at a time one tablet can be punched. Multi station means more than one tablet can be punched at a time. [1]

WORKING: COMPRESSION CYCLE G r a nu l a ti o n stored in hopper Emptied into feed frame Granulation is spread over a wide area Pull down cam lowers the lower punches Dies are overfilled Weight control can reduce fill in dies Wipe of blade removes excess granulation Lower punches back in the front of feed frame Travel over lower compression roll Compact the granulation over the dies Height of the lower pressure is changed Upper punches are withdrawn Tablets flush with or above the surface of the dies Tablets slide down a chute into a receptacle [1,4]
STAGES OF TABLET COMPRESSION PROCESS F I LL I NG Involves transfer of granules to the compressing machine punch-die cavity. The granulation is overfilled on the die table (turret). M ETE R I N G Involves removal of excess granulation from the compressing machine. Enables the exact weight (volume) of granulation. CO M P R E SS ION Involves bringing together the upper and lower punches under pressure within the die to form the tablet. The proper balance of thickness and hardness determines optimum roll for any product. EJECTION Involves removal of tablets from lower punch die station A scraper pushes the tablet off the die table away into the collection container. [1,4]
ADVANTAGES High productivity can be gained with a minimal amount of labor while saving money. Rotary press has an output of between 9000 – 234000 tab/hour. This will depend on design and configuration of the tableting machine. So, the machine saves time . Rotary press decreases waste of valuable formulation in non-specific tablets. Highly efficient, since it is an automatic equipment, with the easy and humanized operation. Smooth surface of tablet and high-quality. DISADVANTAGES It is more costly than a single station press. High maintenance cost. Multi-station compression machine needs a little bit of expertise considering that it has various automated systems. The high possibility of pollution and contamination is another shortcoming of this tableting machine. [3,4] [4]
MAINTANANCE Automated cleaning system. Using an automated cleaning system, such as an ultrasonic wash with a rinse and dryer, can ensure proper, consistent cleaning and drying of tooling, with limited handling and potential for damage . Handling . Poor handling of tooling, before or after use in a tablet press, is the main cause of tooling damage. Reducing handling and human interaction with tooling can minimize the potential for damage . Inspection. You can also extend tooling life by implementing a thorough inspection procedure using equipment that effectively identifies wear. For visual inspection, use a horizontal optical comparator for checking punch tip wear as well as wear to the punch’s relief . Refurbishing tooling . To repair damaged tooling , such as to remove J-hooks on a punch tip, use a benchtop motor or buffing station with a vacuum, equipped with a large , buffing wheel. You can also use a buffing wheel to polish the punch cups to minimize sticking. [4]
CONCLUSION As you can see, a tablet press tooling plays a fundamental role in tableting process. Therefore, choosing an appropriate design that meets your specific tablet compression applications is critical. Furthermore, the design, treatment and standardization of tablet press tool types are fundamental in ensuring maximum and efficient and Uniform productivity . [4]
