INTRODUCTION : A TERRACED HOUSE OR A TOWN HOUSE IS A TERM IN ARCHITECTURE & CITY PLANNING REF. TO A STYLE OF MEDIUM DENSITY HOUSING. ORIGIN OF ROW HOUSING WAS IN EUROPE ARROUND 16 TH CENTURY. TOWN HOUSES GENERALLY ARE OF TWO TO THREE STOREY HOUSES, WHERE WE SEE COMMON WALL SHARED BY NEIGHBOURING HOUSES. FIRST & LAST HOUSES IN A ROW ARE SAID TO HAVE END TERRACES. MIDDLE HOUSES SAID TO HAVE MID TERRACES .

ROADS LEADING INTO THE LIC COLONY

ROW HOUSE UNIT SITE PLAN OF THE ROW HOUSE UNIT BUILT IN 1979 BY B.V DOSHI. THERE ARE 3 TYPES OF HOUSES SINGLE BEDROOM HOUSE WITH PLOT AREA OF 10’ X 10’ 2 BEDROOM HOUSE- 110 SQ.YARDS ( 16’ X 60’ ) 2 BEDROOM HOUSE WITH 16’ X 60’ PLOT SIZE AND NO SPLIT LEVELS. N

21 WAS THE PLOT WHICH WE VISITED. THE OWNER WAS THE SECOND OWNER OF THE HOUSE. HE BOUGHT THE HOUSE IN 1981. ORIGINAL RATE WAS 1 LAKH 10 THOUSAND. HE BOUGHT IT FOR 1.5 LAKHS. NOW THE HOUSE COULD BE SOLD FOR 1 CRORE NOW.

A SMALL GATE WELCOMES US INTO THIS WARM HOUSE. SUFFICIENT PARKING FOR A SINGLE CAR. 12’X15’ IS THE MINIMUM COMMON PARKING AREA. SMALL PARAPET WALLS, INCREASING INTERACTIONS BETWEEN NEIGHBOURS. 45 CM IS THE COMMON PLINTH HEIGHT. ENTRANCE DOOR WIDTH IS 1.2M.

LITTLE LANDSCAPE ALONG THE WALL TO RIGHT SIDE.

THEY HAVE A INCLINED WALL CREATING A PROJECTION AT THE ENTRANCE. THIS PROJECTION KEEPS THE HARSH CLIMATIC CONDITIONS FROM ENTERING THE HOUSE. A SQUARE WINDOW IS GIVEN AT THE ENTRANCE. THIS PROVIDES VENTILATION TO THE HALL AS WELL AS ENABLES THE HABITANTS TO SEE WHO IS AT THE MAIN DOOR. THEY HAD A COURTYARD NOW USED AS A COMMON SHAFT PLACED B/W BOTH HOUSES. CROSS VENTILATIONN IS SEEN.

LEFT SIDE WINDOW IS SEE THROUGH ONE.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN 3 STEPS LEAD INTO THE FOYER THERE IS A HALL WITH STAIRS LEADING TO BEDROOMS. FROM THE LIVING ROOM,THERE ARE 2 STEPS DOWN. THIS AREA IS AN OPEN DINING AREA. FROM THIS AREA,A PARTITION KIND OF THING IS CREATED WITH A CUPBOARD. BEHIND THAT CUPBOARD IS A KITCHEN. THE KITCHEN HAS A BACK DOOR LEADING INTO THE UTILITY AREA. THERE ARE SEPARATE BATHROOM AND WASHROOM,WITH A WASHBASIN IN BETWEEN..

ENTRANCE THE ENTRANCE LEADS TO HALL, WHICH IS A DOUBLE HEIGHT SPACE. THERES A WINDOW ABOVE THE ENTRANCE DOOR.

AIR SHAFT SPACE IT WAS A CENTRAL AND COMMON COURTYARD FOR ADJOINING HOUSES, ACTING AS A AIR SHAFT. REDUCED INTO A CLOSED SPACE.

THE LIVING ROOM DOUBLE HEIGHT SPACE. A LONG WINDOW POURS VENTILATION INTO THE HOUSE. FROM THE LIVING ROOM, THERE IS ACCESS TO KITCHEN,UPSTAIRS, WASHROOMS.

THE DINNING AND KITCHEN SPACE IS 2 STEPS BELOW . EACH STEP HAS 15CM RISER THERE IS SO MUCH OF LIGHT COMING INTO THE HOUSE .

LIGHT COMING ITNO THE HOUSE..ABOVE THE DINING AREA WE CAN SEE THE STEPS TOWARDS THE KITCHEN AREA. THERE IS A SMALL STORAGE SPACE UNDER THE STAIRCASE. DOOR CAN BE SEEN IN THE SECOND PICTURE.

WC & BATH AREAS ARE SEPARATED . THEY HAVE BEDROOM ON EACH LANDING. A WASHBASIN SEPERATES BOTH THE SERVICE AREAS. THIS ACTS AS AN ADVANTAGE, AS THERE IS NO DISTURBANCE CREATED IN DIFFERENT SERVICES USAGE. THE WASH BASIN IS CLOSER TO THE DINING AREA.

KITCHEN INTERIOR KITCHEN IS AN OPEN OR LIVE KITCHEN. THERE IS A CHIMNEY AND A WINDOW NEAR TO THE GAS STOVE. THE OWNERS HAVE ARRANGED THE DINING TABLE INTO THE KITCHEN AREA.

POOJA SPACE BETWEEN THE EXTENDED LIVING SPACE AND KITCHEN IS THE POOJA SPACE. A SMALL MANDAP ADJOINING THE KITCHEN WORK SPACE.

UTILITY DOOR IN THE KITCHEN AREA MANY CUPBOARDS ARE WALL MOUNTED.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN FIRST FLOOR HAS A SINGLE BEDROOM, WITH A COMMON BATHROOMS. THE BAHROOMS ARE AGAIN SEPARATED INTO DRY AND WET AREAS AS IN GROUND FLOOR. THIS FLOOR SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS MEZZANINE. THE BEDROOM IS LOCATED ON THE 1 ST LANDING

STAIRCASE LEADING TO UPPER FLOORS. WE HAVE A BEDROOM ON EVERY LANDING.

LESS IS MORE EVERY BEDROOM IS SPACIOUS. A DOUBLE COT BED IN EVERY BEDROOM CUPBOARDS PRESENT IN EVERY ROOM LONG WINDOWS, ALLOWS GOOD AMOUNT OF LIGHT AND AIR.
