What is Rubrics Word “Rubrics” first originated in 15 th century Derived from Latin word “RED” ( Chowdhury , 2018) Grading tool which added reliability validity and transparency to assessment Decrease subjectivity ( Silvestary & Oescher , 2006)

DEFINITION The descriptions of the possible levels of attainment for each of the criteria or dimensions of performance are described fully enough to make them useful for judgment of, or reflection on, progress toward valued objectives. (Huba & Freed, 2000)

Benefits of Using Rubrics Notifies Students of Expectations Provides Informative and Timely Feedback Helps to Maintain Grading Consistency and Fair Assessment Fosters Student Learning and Self-Assessment ( Chowdhury , 2018)

Constructing a Rubric Task Description Scale Dimensions Description of Dimensions ( Chowdhury , 2018)

Task Description guidelines how to complete a task. Usually task descriptions are extracted from the syllabus and added on the top of a rubric ( Chowdhury , 2018)

Scale The scale in a rubric indicates the different levels of performance for grading Beginners use three levels of performance but later expand it to five For Example High level; Middle level; Beginning level Accomplished; Average; Developing; Beginning ( Chowdhury , 2018)

Dimensions Break down each task or assignment into different dimensions Assigns a weight to each of the various dimensions Relative importance of each component is emphasized Dimension represents the skills that Students must display when solving a particular task ( Chowdhury , 2018)

Description of Dimensions Provide a description of each dimension Description of dimension indicates the various skills and knowledge What level of proficiency and skills represent the best level of performance ( Chowdhury , 2018)

The four basic parts of a Rubrics [1] TASK DESCRIPTION: Students are required to write an essay on the topic “Today the education quality is not as good as it was 5 years back”. The students must write the essay within 1500 words. The essay should include facts, evidence or personal experiences to showcase creativity, conceptual understanding and analytical abilities . [2] SCALE Sophisticated Competent Partly competent Not yet competent [3]DIMENSIONS Depth of analysis [ 4] DESCRIPTION OF DIMENSIONS The author goes beyond the basic requirements of the assignment and explores the implications and evidence in new light using original thinking. Grasp of the concepts Paragraph writing Use of evidence Conclusion ( Chowdhury , 2018)

TYPES OF RUBRICS Rubrics can be categorized in two ways Analytic & Holistic Task-specific & General ( Chowdhury , 2018)

Holistic Rubrics All dimensions are evaluated simultaneously Suitable for summative assessments Scoring can be faster Arovide a single overall score Fails to provide clear information about where or how improvements can be achieved ( Chowdhury , 2018)

Holistic Rubrics (Allen & Tanner,2006)

Analytic Rubrics Each dimension or criterion is evaluated separately Focus on one criterion at a time Provide detailed feedback to students about their strengths and weaknesses on each task component Helpful for future improvements Good for formative assessments Takes more time to score tasks compared to holistic rubrics ( Chowdhury , 2018)
