Steps Used in Critical Reading as Reasoning

Steps Used in Critical Reading as Reasoning Identifying assertions – Fact – a thing proven to be proven as true or false. Ex: Manila is the capital of the Philippines b. Convention – an agreed-upon standard or norm/way within a particular context or environment. Ex. Most cars in Japan use the right-hand drive, but on the Philippines we have left-hand drive. c. Opinion – is a subjective judgment or belief that cannot necessarily be proven true or false. Ex. The 2024 Olympic Games was the best one ever. d. Preference – is a subjective liking or inclination towards something. Ex. Chocolate is my favorite flavor.

EXAMPLE

When you write your counterclaim, you are expressing unfavorable statements. Therefore, it is needed that you USE HEDGES, WHICH ARE WORDS OR PHRASES THAT GIVE A COURTEOUS TONE. Different FORMS OF HEDGES Modals: may, could, would, should, might, certain, must, etc. Frequency adverbs: usually, generally, commonly Probability adverbs: probably, possibly, presumably Example: The common cold is caused by a virus. (no hedges) With hedges: The common cold must be caused by a virus. The common virus is certain to be caused by a virus
