Story 1 :
A cup of tea
-KATHERINE MANSFIELD

Summary
Rosemary Fell, a young, wealthy woman, goes shopping at a florist's
and in anantique shoponCurzon Street. Before going to the car,
Rosemary is approached by Miss Smith, a poor girl who asks for
enough money to buy tea. Instead, Rosemary drives the girl to her
plush house. At the Fells' home, Miss Smith eats her fill. She then
begins to tell Rosemary of her life when Rosemary's husband, Philip,
comes in. Although initially surprised, Philip recovers and asks to
speak to Rosemary alone. In the library, Philip conveys his
disapproval. When Rosemary resists dismissing Miss Smith, Philip
tries another, more successful, tactic. He plays to Rosemary's jealousy
by telling her how pretty Miss Smith is. Rosemary retrieves three five-
pound notes and, presumably, sends the girl away. This dismissal is a
far cry from Rosemary's first vow to "be frightfully nice to her" and to
"look after her." Later, Rosemary goes to her husband and informs
him "Miss Smith won't dine with us tonight." She first asks about the
antique box from the morning, but then arrives at her true concern:
She quietly asks him, "Am I pretty?" She's very insecure.

The enamel box was quite beautiful and attractive. It had a giaze
so fine as if it had been baked in cream. On the lead a tiny
creature stood under a flowery tree, and the smaller creature
still had her arms around his neck. and there was a pink cloud
like a watchful angle floating above there heads. The blue velvet
box was really very fascinating and charming.

Philip's opinion about the Ms.smith was totally unexpected and
rosemary was totally shocked by it. She reacted angrily saying 'You
absurd creature!' . Rosemary thought about the risk of kipping
Ms.smith in her house. She was filled with jealousy as Philip had
praised Ms.smith's beauty. consequently Rosemary prepare to get
read of Ms.smith as Soon as possible to avoid any trouble in her
married life.

(4) Describe the character of Rosemary.
Elaborate using examples from the story
to illustrate the answer.(Long Question)
Ans: In a cup of tea by Katherine Mansfield we have the theme of
jealously, insecurities, materialism and class. The story is narrated in
the third person by an unnamed narrator and after reading the story
the reader realises that Mansfield maybe exploring the theme of class
or rather the differences between social classes.
Rosemary fell is the heroine of the story. A cup of tea written by
Katherine Mansfield. She represent the aristocratic society. She is the
young fashionable lady from London who constantly seeks attention,
appreciation and love.

By telling the reader that ‘they were rich, really rich, not
just comfortably well off’ Mansfield succeeds in not only
highlighting to the reader how wealthy Rosemary and
Philip are but more importantly she manages to highlight
how different Rosemary is from others. Something that is
a little clearer when Mansfield also tells the reader ‘if
Rosemary wanted to shop she would go to Paris as you
and I would go to Bond Street.’ Though it may appear to
be insignificant the fact that Rosemary has a car may also
be important as by introducing the car into the story it is
possible that Mansfield is further highlighting the class
difference that exists between Rosemary and those
around her. At the time the story was written only the very
wealthy (mostly upper class) would have had the
resources to buy a car.

The author had edit a touch of satire on the sophisticated,
higher class people thought the character of Rosemary.
Rosemary also feels surprised when she knows that
Ms.smith doesn't have a single penny. She finds it a good
chance to show mercy to Ms.smith. it was a false show of
feeling. It was simply a fanciful idea that captured her mind.
She decided to take her home and offer some help along
with a cup of tea. It was something like an adventure or a
topic for a discussion on among her friend later. This her
hypocrisy made her help Ms.smith. she assured all her good
feeling to ms.smith. but the poor girl had no trust on such
rich people however she went with her and expiration
Rosemary's treatment.

It is also interesting that Rosemary, while Miss Smith
is in her bedroom having tea, leaves Miss Smith’s hat
and coat on the floor. Bydoing so Mansfield may be
suggesting that in Rosemary’s eyes, Miss Smith is not
her equal. This wouldfurther highlight the difference
in class (in Rosemary’s eyes) between Miss Smith
and Rosemary. At nostage in the story does the
reader feelthat Rosemary, by taking Miss Smith
home with her, is doing so for the benefit of Miss
Smith rather it serves to boost Rosemary’s
perception of herself. She does after all consider the
taking of Miss Smith home with her to be an
adventure, something she will be able to boast
about to her friends.

Rosemary’s change of attitude towards Miss Smith after Philip
tells her that he thinks Miss Smith is pretty is also interesting. It
is from Philip’s remark that the reader realises not only is
Rosemary jealous of Miss Smith (because she is pretty) but she
also appears to be insecure about her own physical appearance.
Itmay also be a case thatPhilip is attempting to manipulate or
controlRosemary, just as she has Miss Smith. By
tellingRosemary thatMiss Smith is pretty Philip is aware that it
will result in Rosemary not only feeling jealous but it will also
ensure that Miss Smith leaves their home, just as Philip wants
her to. If anything Philip appears to want to disassociate himself
(and Rosemary) from Miss Smith, which would again play on the
theme of class. Philip does not want to associate himself with
those (Miss Smith) he considers to be of a lower class.
How insecureRosemary may feel about her physical appearance
is further noticeable by the fact that afterMiss Smith leaves
Rosemary’s home, Mansfield tells the reader that Rosemary
‘done her hair, darkened her eyes a little and put on her pearls.’

This action is important as it suggests thatRosemary
is attempting to make herself pretty, at least in
Philips eyes.
Also by ending the story with Rosemary asking Philip
‘am I pretty?’ Mansfield may be further highlighting
how insecure Rosemary feelsabout her physical
appearance. Despite being wealthy and living a life
that the majority of people at the time the story was
written were unable to live, Rosemaryis insecure.
Thus through Rosemary, Mansfield explores vividly
the theme of class or rather the differences between
social classes in the story ‘ A Cup of Tea’.

Story : With the
photographer
-Stephen Leacock

Stephen Leacock’s With The Photographer is taken from “Behind the
Beyond”. Leacock is famous for his humorous writings. In, With The
Photographer, Leacock shared his bitter experience with a
photographer
One day Leacock went to a studio to take his photograph. The
photographer looked at him without enthusiasm. He made the author
to wait for an hour. Then he took him into the inner room to take
photo. He placed a machine in front of the author. The photographer
was not happy of the author’s face. He said that the author’s face was
quite wrong. The author accepted it. The photographer added that it
would look better if it was three quarters full. To prove his skill in
photography, he asked the author to open his mouth and to close it.
He felt that the author’s ears were bad so he asked him to drop them
a little more. He asked Leacock to roll his eyes under the eyelids, to
put the hands on knees, to turn the face little upward, to expand the
lungs, to bend the neck. By all means he wanted the best feature and
expression of the author.

By the photographer’s comment about his face, he felt
humiliated. He couldn’t bear the insult anymore, as his face was
his own only. He had lived with it for forty years and he knew its
faults. The author was angry and started to rise from the seat, the
photographer took his photograph.
On Saturday, the author went back to the studio to get
his photograph. The photographer showed his photo. The author
was not able to identify his own image in it, because the
photographer made so many changes in his eyes, eyebrow, mouth
etc. The photograph didn’t look like the author’s photo at all. So
the author asked the question ‘Is it me?’
The author wanted a photograph that would have looked
like himself. He wanted something that would depict his face as
God gave it to him. He wanted something that his friends might
have kept after his death to reconcile them to his loss. But what
the author wanted was no longer done.

Leacock didn’t accept the photo given by the photographer,
because the photo was too beautiful to bear any resemblance to
his appearance. Leacock preferred his featureless face as it is and
would not accept an improved one which is unlike his face.

The narrator liked his ears in his photograph. Which seemed
to be real. The photographer responded coldly to this. He
