RHS and Digital Citizenship One of our goals as teachers is to educate our students and parents about safe and responsible technology use and guide them towards digital citizenship.

What is Digital Citizenship? Recognizing the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of living, learning, and working in an interconnected digital world and acting in ways that are safe, legal, and ethical. Digital citizenship includes, not only your actions in your online courses, but also in your personal life - including, sending a picture on your smartphone, playing video games online, and interacting with others on social media. Good digital citizens protect their personal information, use good judgment, and treat others with respect. As a result, practicing good digital citizenship makes our online world a more welcoming place for everyone. Without a doubt, technology affects every aspect of our lives. In an effort to develop well-rounded digital citizens, DoDEA Virtual School (DVS) recognizes the components of digital citizenship - digital footprints; online privacy and security, including cyberbullying; and academic integrity, which includes citing sources, plagiarism, and the use of translation software. For more information on school policies regarding digital citizenship, academic integrity, and other online behavior expectations, check out DVS Guidelines for Student Behavior in the DVS Handbook. Why teach Digital Citizenship? Some key reasons digital citizenship education is critical: It promotes online safety by teaching kids how to protect private information and avoid scams,  predators, explicit content, and cyberbullying. Cybersecurity and privacy should be key focuses. It reduces the actual occurrence of cyberbullying by empowering kids to stand up to hate speech and cruelty online. In-depth lessons on empathy, ethics, and respect are essential. It counters internet addiction by encouraging kids to balance screen time with real-world activities. Teaching self-control and moderation in tech usage are important skills. It fights misinformation by showing kids how to evaluate information online sources and think critically about what they see on social media. Developing strong media literacy is foundational. It fosters digital responsibility by demonstrating how to avoid piracy, plagiarism, and other unethical online behaviors. Ethical tech use must be consistently modeled. It expands opportunities by teaching kids how to use technology to create, collaborate, and make a positive difference in the world. Building digital etiquette skills opens doors. With comprehensive and engaging digital citizenship, teaching digital citizenship and digital etiquette to elementary students can raise kids to be digitally literate, ethical, empowered participants online and in life. Digital Netiquette Privacy is more than just what you choose to share or not share online. Never share private information online. Private information includes things that can identify you, like your full name, address, telephone number, birthday, and even which school you attend. You can share personal information, like your hobbies and favorite colors. Just be sure that the personal information that you do share is safe, responsible, and respectful. If you’re not sure what is safe to share, ask a trusted adult. ( Digital_Citizenship , 2023)

Digital Netiquette Online privacy and security is more than protecting your private information, it’s also about preventing and protecting you from cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like smartphones, computers, and tablets. Cyberbullying can occur through texts and apps on smartphones and tablets, as well as online in social media and video games where people can view, participate in, or share content. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, mean, or threatening content about someone else. It can include sharing personal or private information about someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation. Sometimes, cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behavior. ( Digital_Citizenship , 2023)

Online Citing Methods When do you have the right to quote from sources? The right to citation means that you can use materials (short works or portions of works) in your own work without having to request permission. Requirements for using citations: Must be from published works – not: diaries, internal documents from a company. The quote must serve as documentation or the basis for an explanation. This means, content of the work used must be the object of discussion. The source must be named: It must clearly identified. Required information include, in particular, the name of the author and the location of the quote. Only the necessary amount of material may be used. In each individual case, please consider: How broadly available is the material in which the work was used? To what extend does this usage limit the utilization possibilities of the copyright holder. (Teaching, 2024)
