Safety of Double Product Thrombopheresis Donation

What is Thrombopheresis ? Apheresis procedure to collect platelets and plasma from donors. Double product thrombopheresis involves the collection of both components simultaneously. Purpose of This Review: Assess the safety profile of double product thrombopheresis for donors.

Procedure Overview Steps Involved: Venous access is established. Blood is drawn and separated using an apheresis machine. Platelets and plasma are collected, and other components are returned to the donor. Duration: Typically lasts 1.5 to 2 hours.

Donor Eligibility Criteria Age and Weight Requirements: Minimum age: 18 years (varies by country). Minimum weight: 50 kg. Health Conditions: No chronic illnesses or active infections. Hemoglobin and platelet count within normal ranges. Medications: No use of antiplatelet drugs before donation

Safety Considerations Common Side Effects: Mild fatigue. Tingling sensation ( hypocalcemia from anticoagulants). Rare Complications: Vasovagal reactions (dizziness, fainting). Hematoma or discomfort at needle insertion site

Monitoring and Mitigation Before Donation: Thorough health screening. Donor education about the procedure and side effects. During Donation: Monitoring for signs of discomfort or adverse reactions. Use of citrate anticoagulants to prevent clotting. After Donation: Encourage hydration and rest. Provide post-donation care instructions.
