Hot desert - Sahara

The Sahara desert lies in North Africa. It is the world’s largest desert with an area of 8.54 million sq. km . It touches 11 countries – Chad, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger ,Sudan, Tunisia & Western Sahara The place

Climate The climate of Sahara desert is scorching hot and parch dry. It has a short rainy season. The sky is cloudless & clear. Days are hot & the temperature may soar as high as 50 degrees Celsius. Heating up the sand & the bare rocks , which in turn radiates heat making everything around hot. The night may be freezing cold with temperatures nearing zero degrees.

Vegetation in the Sahara desert includes cactus, date palms & acacia. In some places there are OASIS, green islands with date palms surrounding them. Camels , hyenas , foxes , scorpions and also many varieties of snakes & lizards are prominent animal species living there. Flora & Fauna

People The people here are mainly tribes such as the Bedouins and tauregs who rear livestock such as goat, sheep, camels &horses. These animals provide them with milk, hides from which they make leather for belts, slippers, water bottles; hair is used for mats, carpets, clothes & blankets. They grow crops like rice, wheat, barley & beans. They wear heavy robes as protection against dust storms & hot winds.
