Question 5 What are school health programmes , how are they done, who does them, what services are offered in school health programs and their importance?

INTRODUCTION School health is an important branch of community health that aims at improving student health and well being. There are some health problems of a school child which include; malnutrition, infectious diseases, intestinal parasites,disease of skin ,eyes and ears etc

5a) What are School Health programmes ? School Health Programmes are comprehensive ways to promoting the physical ,mental and social wellbeing of students ,staff ,and the school community as a whole . In other words , are organized ,established sets of policies, activities, designed to protect and provide extensive care for the health well being of school children. The programmes can take place either within school premises or in a health centre situated outside the school.

b) How are they done? The school health programs were introduced to ensure healthy children and staff and work under the following aims and objectives; Design and development-school decides and incorporate school health programmes into the school timetable. Teacher training and professional learning. By creating a healthy environment in school e.g. installing water pumps, ensuring proper sanitation and maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Curriculum integration. Providing healthy and balanced meals to students, promoting good eating habits and educating them about the importance of nutrition. Monitoring and evaluation to assess the effects of the program and assess areas of improvement.

Community engagement by inviting social workers, DHOs to engage with the local community to promote health and well being, leveraging resources and expertise from various sectors.

c) Who does them? These programmes are implemented by a variety of stake holders which include; Teachers - Play a vital role in educating students about health issues and promoting health habits. School nurses - provide medical services and health education for students. Community health organization ; Provide resources and support health promotion activities e.g. The AIDS Support Organization(TASO).

School administrators - They permit, over see and coordinate school health programmes . Counselors - Provide guidance and counseling services to students. Government agencies - Developing policies and allocating funds for comprehensive school health programmes e.g. Ministry of health.

d) What services are offered in school health programme ? School health programmes offer a wide range of services to promote the physical, emotional and social well being and these include; Health screening- regular health screenings help to identify health issues early enabling timely interventions e.g. pregnancy tests, HIV tests, UTI tests, malaria tests. Physical Education (PE)- promote physical fitness and health. Immunization- monitoring and administration of vaccines to prevent diseases e.g. Tetanus, hepatitis, cervical cancer, yellow fever.

Mass deworming - to prevent and treat parasitic infection. Nutrition and food services -Offering healthy food options and promoting healthy eating habits, and are given safe drinking water.

Mental health such as counseling and guidance, support students emotional well being. Medical check ups -Provide students with access to medical care and treatment for various health issues e.g malaria. First aid and emergencies- Providing immediate care for injuries and equipping students with life saving skills. Healthy school environment- Students are taught how to keep the school clean ,kept in aproperly fenced school and free from all hazards.

The importance of these services lies in their ability to; Enhance academic performance. Reduce absenteeism. Prevention of diseases . Enhanced well being. Community impact by promoting healthy habits and raising awareness about health issues. Reduced teenage pregnancies.

Reduced school drop outs. Decreased stigma around health issues and developmental changes. Improve health outcomes if diagnosed early. Promoting health and self care.
